To the editor:
If you visit the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California you may hear strange sounds, that of the late President turning over in his grave at the current state of the Republican Party.
Reagan was the first MAGA president, “recall that in 1980 he ran on the slogan “Let’s Make America Great Again.”
But today’s MAGA Republicans are nothing like the party that Reagan represented. Today’s GOP has been completely taken over by the cult of Donald Trump.
Don Jr. expressed this on January 22, 2021, when he said, “this is not the Republican Party but the party of Donald Trump.” Trump, the 2024 candidate for President has been indicated on 91 separate felony counts in four jurisdictions.
Reagan was a strong law and order man. Regarding immigration, for Reagan, immigration was a unique cornerstone of American vitality and renewal and central to his own origin myth. As President, Reagan announced “his intention to continue the American tradition of welcoming immigrants. He called for millions of undocumented ‘illegal immigrants’ then living in the United States to be offered a path to legal status.”
In contrast to Reagan, today’s GOP has used immigration to divide Americans and to make immigrants the scapegoats for a range of domestic ills, including income inequality.”
A bipartisan bill to aid Israel and the Ukraine and a border bill, something the Republicans, including Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell had supported, died when Trump said no. Putting his own interests ahead of the welfare of the country, Trump and his MAGA supporters do not want the “border crisis” to end, they see it as a campaign issue.
Reagan would be shocked by the Putin loving MAGA Republicans filtration with Moscow who oppose aid to Ukraine following Russia’s brutal and unprovoked invasion. Trump said it was “smart” and “genius.”
Reagan was a staunch supporter of the NATO Alliance. He believed that the Soviet Union was an “evil empire and focus of evil in the modern world.”
In a campaign rally on February 10, 2024, Trump encouraged Russia to do “whatever the hell they want” to NATO members that he believed do not spend enough on defense.
Reagan–a proponent of immigration and a cold war warrior would not be welcomed in today’s Republican Party.
