To the editor:
Just when you think that there is a limit to what the Trump family will do for money and publicity, Don Sr. and Junior are hawking their so-called “God Bless the USA Bible.”
The package includes a King James Version of the Bible, a copy of the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the handwritten chorus of Lee Greenwood’s God Bless the USA, for $59.99.
Don Jr. is asking $70 for the packet he is selling. Never mind the fact that the Bible is free from many churches and costs considerably less to buy, and the other documents are in the public domain and can be found at libraries or downloaded for free.
Besides the obvious need for cash for his legal troubles and campaigns, what is Trump’s motivation? The answer might be the Evangelicals, a group that was previously one of his biggest supporters and donors.
Mike Evans, an Evangelical leader who helped get Trump elected the first time, said in a Washington Post essay, “that when he said things that horrified us, we had to ‘close our mouths and eyes, I cannot do that anymore.”
In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus warned his followers to “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly they are ravening wolves.”
Late night hosts have poked a lot of fun at Trump’s new found but dubious spiritual awakening. One joked that Trump’s “God Bless the USA” King James Bible had the 10 commandments blacked out, especially the 8th, “Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery,” the 9th “Thous Shall Not Steal,” and the 10th “Thou Shall Not Bear False Witness.”
On Sundays, when he is out on one of his various golf courses, he might remember the 5th commandment “To Remember the Sabbath and Keep It Holy.” Really not the same as being in Church.
On the matter of the 8th commandment, he has been married three times and cheated on all three wives.
In an interview, he was unable to recite a single verse from his “favorite” book. Based on his past behavior in regard to the written word, I would suggest this verse, “Jesus Wept.”
