One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, April 16, 1924.)
The wholesale egg dealers of Iowa in their meeting held at Des Moines March 20, 1924 unanimously adopted a resolution to commence on April 1, 1924, to buy eggs on a two-grade basis.
The clean eggs of fair size to go as Number 1, or first. While the extreme dirties, cracks, washed and small eggs to go as Number 2 or seconds.
In response to the growing demand of increasing business and to supply a needed improvement which will be advantageous to the community, the Teale Auto Company is having built in the northwest corner of their garage on the southeast corner of the square a ladies restroom. All conveniences will be provided, the room will be nicely decorated and when complete will be thrown open for use of the public.

Births: April 11, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Arla Moore…April 16, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Dickerson…last Tuesday a son, to Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Miller.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

As been its custom in former years, the Prentis Hatchery in Mount Ayr is again giving away baby chicks on the day preceding Easter. Every boy and girl who visit the hatchery on Saturday, April 16 between 2-6 p.m. will be given a free baby chick.
The initial open house for the Grundy-Shelby experimental farm, located one-half mile north of Beaconsfield, will be held Friday afternoon, April 22.
Visiting the experimental farm during its open house will give everyone in this and surrounding counties the opportunity of seeing the farm in its raw stages, before the experimental work is actually begun.
Experimental work will include studies on crop rotations, pasture improvement methods, kinds and amount of commercial fertilizers and lime applications, the best varieties of grasses and legumes and other far crops.

The Duane Poore family of Beaconsfield has been selected as the FHA Family of the year for the Creston office, according to Russell K. Booth, FHA Supervisor for Union and Ringgold counties.
Tom Mahan and David Chartrand, who will be seniors this fall in the MACH school, have been selected by Ringgold Post #172 American Legion, to attend Boys State , June 1-7 at Camp Dodge.
Dan Cunning of the W.B. Cunning, Co. Inc., is the new president of the Mount Ayr Lions Club. Cunning, who succeeds Rollin B. Noble, will assume his duties on July 1.
At a recent reorganizational meeting, Bruce Ricker was elected captain of the Mount Ayr Huddle of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Clyde Summers was sworn in as the new mayor and topics such as the teen center, walking and bicycle trail, zoning requests and housing rehabilitation were discussed when the Mount Ayr city council held its regular meeting Monday.
Four Mount Ayr FFA chapter members took some of the top awards when they were announced at the FFA Banquet Monday night.
Chaper farmer, Mike Faris; Star Greenhand, Sheryl Dolecheck; Star Agribusiness and most valuable FFA member, Tara Richardson and Star Agribusiness winner Joe Snethen.
For the first time in four years track is a spring sport in Diagonal Community School District. The high school boys and girls are being coached by Shari Dreeszen.

Ten Years Ago

At its meeting March 24 the Clearfield Community school board of directors finalized a plan to sell the Clearfield school building and adjoining site to the city of Clearfield for the sum of one dollar.
A blind 1,800 pound calf being delivered to Community Meat Processors in Mount Ayr pushed through a gate and escaped into the nearby neighborhood Monday morning causing damage to two residences along the way.
Senior Allison Wallace was named the 2014 recipient of the Arian Award as the top band student at Mount Ayr Community high school.
Erik Freed and Jack Jones, both seniors at Mount Ayr Community high school, have signed letters of intent to run cross country and track and field at Southwestern Community College in Creston starting with the fall 2014 semester.
A Mount Ayr Community graduate has received national recognition for her cancer research. Lori Sickels Friedman, PhD, has been selected as a 2014 Rising Star by the Healthcare Business Women’s Association.
She will be honored May 1 at a formal ceremony in New York City.
