One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, May 7, 1924.)
Tingley News~R.J. Frazier of Des Moines, special agent for Standard Oil, came last week to take charge of the oil and gasoline business in this territory.
Mr. Grant Hayes and Miss Myrtle of this city and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Sheesley and J.H. Sheesley and others of Tingley, went Friday to Shenandoah where they will broadcast an evening’s program from Henry Fields radio station.
A few years ago a car load of waifs from New York City was brought to southwest Iowa and the boys and girls were placed in homes in that section.
Karl W. Boll, of Red Oak, refers to a case which shows the good intentions of the organization in New York. He says that Percy Barley, a New York orphan, who was arrested a couple weeks ago for theft at the Applequist home south of Stanton, and who had been kept in the county jail at Red Oak ever since, was taken back to New York Monday evening by a woman representing the Children’s Aid Society, of New York. (New York Historical Society: From 1853-1929 the Emigration Department, interchangeably known as the Placing-Out Department, and finally the Foster Home Department, sent tens of thousands of children to the country, placing them most often with farm families. With this program, the Children’s Aid Society became one of the first and principal organizations orchestrating the mass migration of children now known as “the orphan train,” and established itself as a pioneer in the development of foster care for children, as opposed to institutionalization in orphanages or almshouses.)
As the date for holding primary election, Monday, June 2 approaches, interest in the campaign increases and candidates are entertaining into an intense campaign.
In addition to nominating candidates for both political parties all the voters will have the opportunity to vote on the important proposition of issuing bonds for the purpose of building a new court house.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Don Guthrie placed second with his entries in the Checkered Giant division of the annual spring rabbit show held Saturday in Clarinda.
Close to 500 4-H members, leaders and committees saw Robert Walker and Patricia Harvey receive trophies for outstanding record books and Mrs. Fred Jezek received a pearl pin for 15 years of service as a 4-H leader and committee member at the annual Ringgold county 4-H fun night held in Mount Ayr April 27.
Eldon Main, president of the Lions Club presented the trophies.
Mrs. Esther Dixon of Lenox was elected president of the Iowa Press Women’s Association at its annual spring meeting Sunday in Ames. Mrs. Dixon, the former Esther Wallace, of Benton, was also elected as a delegate to the National Press Women’s convention which will be held June 2-5 at Kansas City, MO.
Marriage: April 26, Alieene Hogue and Pfc James Monaghan.
Birth: April 21, a daughter, Cynthia, to Mr. and Mrs. Herman Chandler.
Fifty Years Ago

The Jaycees today announced that they are holding a Jaycee bike marathon on May 18.
The marathon will see Rick Stull and Benson Hainline ride a two-seater bike from Mount Ayr to Altoona. Jaycees are taking pledges on a per mile basis to support their efforts.
The funds will be used to help construct new bleachers at the Jaycee ballfield located at Judge Lewis Park.
Mark Larsen, head girls basketball, softball and track coach at Mount Ayr Community high school, has resigned that position to take a similar position at Indianola high school.
Sixteen nights of races have been scheduled at the Ringgold County Speedway for the 1974 season, according to association president Jack Hutchinson. The season will open May 26 and close September 1.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

A Mount Ayr Community high school senior, Rachel Derscheid, has been named to the Southwest Iowa Regional Academic All-State award by the Des Moines Register.
Derscheid ranks 1st in the graduating class this year and had a 32 ACT test score. She is active in sports, cheerleading, and a member of numerous clubs and organizations.
A merger is set to take place in June between Cradles to Crayons and Big Bird, two preschool programs in Mount Ayr.
After much deliberation by the boards of the organizations, a vote of the parents was taken and it was decided that the two groups should merge.
Both boards will dissolve June 1, 1999 and a new board will be developed sometime thereafter.
The Ringgold County Sheriff’s department is looking for toys that were stolen recently from a Ringgold county residence.
The old toys were allegedly dumped in a ditch along a gravel road approximately 2 1/2 miles northwest of Mount Ayr.

Ten Years Ago

Arrests have been made in what is now being ruled a homicide that took place at 1509 Bent Street in Bedford on April 23. The victim, 56 year old Steven Malson, died of a single gunshot wound to the head. The victum’s wife, 47 year old Cindy Malson and their 24 year old son, Zachary Malson, were arrested and each charged with 1st degree murder.
At a special meeting Monday, April 28, the Mount Ayr city council finalized a list of street repair projects and approved a plan to pay for the projects.
The main three projects will address problems with Columbus Street, West Street, and a short stretch of Fillmore Street.
Kylie Wilson receives the Accounting Academic Achievement Award from AIB College of Business. To be considered for the award, Wilson and 43 other honorees were required to maintain a cumulative point average of 3.75 or higher in all their classes not just accounting.
Grant Staats and Cody Stackhouse joined Jacob Sobotka and Erik Freed to set the new Mount Ayr community 4×100 relay record at Drake. The 4×400 set a new school record as well, this team included, Kyle Dolecheck, Noah Larson, Erik Freed and Jacob Sobotka.
