One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, June 18, 1924.)
John Blauer of Tingley has adopted a little boy from the Children’s home in Ottumwa.
Henry C. Wallace, Iowa’s representative in the President’s cabinet as Secretary of Agriculture, has representatives in Central America who have secured specimens of game birds from British Honduras and Gautemala and has placed them in the southern states and as fast as they are acclimated their offspring will be gradually brought north until in the coming years they will be able to endure the colder climate.
Thus far ocellated turkeys, curassows, tinamous and from northern Mexico, several chachalaccas have been secured.
The ocellated turkey is a very handsome bird, somewhat smaller than our native turkey and if established here will prove a very fine addition to birds raised on farms.
The storm which swept through this place Saturday night shortly after midnight was a severe one, but the J.M. Treichler home seemed to catch the full force of its destructiveness in this place.
The family were asleep in two upstairs rooms and a downstairs bedroom when lightening struck the room, seemingly the center chimney and followed all the electric wiring through the entire home almost unroofing it, tearing the casings and plaster loose. The north rooms were open to the sky.

Linn Sheil was elected commander of the Ringgold Post #172 of the American Legion in a meeting held Monday evening in Mount Ayr.
Other officers named for the coming year are Arnold Combs, first vice commander; Owen Campbell, second vice commander; D.D. Taff, adjutant; Lyle Dulany, sergeant -at-arms; S.W. Holland, service officer; Clair Rhoades, alternate service officer; Arthur Palmer, historian; and Ed Carr, finance officer.
The Farm Bureau Service Supply has rented what is known as the Hayes Main building on Depot Street, recently purchased by Darrell Johnston.

Fifty  Years Ago

Charles “Collus” Lawhead, son of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Lawhead of Mount Ayr was one of 64 graduating seniors of the college of dentistry to receive the degree of doctor of dental surgery.
Collus is a third generation of graduate from the University of Iowa College of dentistry. He has purchased the practice of Dr. B.W. Knight and will open the office next week in the same location on East Madison Street.
Joe Place had the thrill of a hole-in-one Sunday at the Mount Ayr Golf and Country Club. The ace came on the fifth hole.
A special “kids night” has been scheduled for the races Sunday, June 23 at the Ringgold County Speedway. All youngsters will receive rides in the race cars, plus a special treat.
Final grades of the Mount Ayr Community school class of 1974 have changed class standings, resulting in a tie for salutatorian honors.
High school conselor, Dan Day, announced Tuesday that the work turned in after the class announcement of honors had changed the standing of Carla DeVries and Evelynn McAlexander. Each girl will receive a trophy signifying the honor.

The search for the body of a Kellerton man who is believed to have drowned in Three Mile Lake near Afton Saturday night was called off Tuesday.
More than 16 hours were spent with divers and dragging equipment trying to locate the body of Don Newton, 50 of Kellerton.
A father/son couple of local anglers has been listed in first place early this season in a walleye fishing tournament series.
Howard Tull of Diagonal and Jim Tull of Redding were featured in the April 26, 1999 issue of the Iowa Walleye Tournament Trail Newsletter for winning a tournament at Little River Lake on Saturday April 25.
Ringgold county will have two natives competing for national coach of the year in different sports when the National High School Coaches Association convention is held in San Diego, CA, June 23-25.
Mark Larsen, long-time Mount Ayr Community girls softball coach, is the regional candidate for national softball coach of the year honors.
Bruce Henderson of Atlantic, formerly of Mount Ayr, is the regional finalist for the national girls track coach of the year.

Ten Years Ago

Ringgold County Assessor, Neil Morgan, met with the board of supervisors during its meeting June 2 to provide updates concerning his department.
Morgan reported the assessed value of residential property in the county is $255 million while the assessed value of agricultural land is $289 million.
A series of serve thunderstorms rattled through Ringgold County last Tuesday evening, June 3 causing widespread damage to buildings, trees, and crops. Power lines were knocked down between Diagonal & Clearfield. Also hit hard was Clearfield cemetery.
Winners from the Sons of American Legion kids fish day last weekend are: Bentleigh Collier, first fish; Bracken Collier, largest fish; Carson Mathany, smallest fish; and Alania Whittington, most fish.
Birth: May 27, a daughter, Greylli, to James and Charli Welling.
