To the editor:
Vocabulary word: Sycophant. Definition from Webster’s Dictionary: A base or servilely attentive flatterer or self-seeker as in fawning or obsequious behavior.
Real Life Examples: House Republicans in an effort to curry favor with Trump.
The latest bill, called the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone [EEZ] to be renamed as the “Donald John Trump Exclusive Economic Zone,” came from Florida Representative Greg Steube. If passed the law would mandate the waters be referred to by the former president in laws, maps, documents, and other records.
Earlier in June, MAGA Congressman Paul Gosar of Arizona introduced a bill to bring back the $500 bill featuring an image of Trump.
In April, a group of House Republicans introduced legislation to rename Washington Dulles International Airport the “Donald J. Trump International Airport.” Not to be outdone, Democratic lawmakers from Virginia, Florida, and California introduced a bill to rename the Miami Federal Correctional Institution the “Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution.”
Perhaps the most telling criticism of this obsequious behavior was made by fellow Republican and former Congressman Adam Kinzinger who said, “in my 12 years in Congress, which was 3 times longer than Trump held office, I would never have fathomed being this much of a dorky [i.e. sycophant] try-hard.”
