One Hundred Years Ago

Grand River, in southern Iowa, is said to be the greatest catfish stream in all Iowa.
It flows into the Missouri River and fish of immense proportions pass out of the big river into the smaller one and keep going until they get up into the region where “the tall corn grows”.
Willard Sellars, near Lamoni, Decatur county, caught a yellow cat that weighed 33 pounds and he says that someone near Davis City caught one that weighed seventy pounds.
Kellerton News~A new creamery station will be opening in a few days in the Gorman building on the east side of the street. It will be operated by Buxton Creamery Co., with John Dickinson as operator.
The Bedford Times Republican of August 18 tells of the identification of the body of the young woman, found under a bridge ten miles west of Bedford, last Wednesday, as that of Miss Lillian McKinney, 21, of Herrick, S.D.
Leslie Zarr nearly met his death Sunday. He was coming down a hill in Knowlton in his car and being unable to stop, was struck by a Great Western engine. The car was completely wrecked and Mr. Zarr had some broken bones.
Birth: August 15, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Orr Reynolds.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

In appreciation of 47 years of continuous and faithful service rendered by Dr. O.L. Fullerton, the people of Redding and surrounding territory will observe “Dr. Fullerton Day” Sunday August 21 at the park in Redding.
Peter McLauren, who for many years held the woodchopping championship in America and Australia, will demonstrate his skill with an axe in Mount Ayr on Monday afternoon August 22 at 4 p.m.
The Todd Hardware is to be congratulated for arranging the visit of this colorful champion, whose wizardy with an axe has carried him from a poor farm lad in Australia, to the peak of his profession.
The annual Ringgold county fair is now in progress under conditions more favorable than any time in the county’s history. Two new barns, one for cattle and one for swine, provide adequate facilities for exhibiting the county’s best in livestock, while an exhibition hall shows girls’ 4-H entries to advantage.

Fifty Years Ago

Karen Newton, a 1974 graduate of Mount Ayr Community school, has joined the staff of the Mount Ayr Record News as a news reporter.
Practice sessions got under way at 7 a.m. Monday for the 1974 version of the Mount Ayr Raider football team. Coach Gary Wimmer greeted 38 candidates for the team, 12 of which were returning letter winners.
Randall Brown of Mount Ayr escaped serious injury when the pickup he was driving wound up in a small pond of water near Loch Ayr Lake on the night of August 14.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Ringgold County sheriff department personal have put in many hours checking along 300 miles of county roads, but Lyle Leonard, 46, of Clearfield is still missing.
Family members this week announced a $2,500 reward for information that would help them find Leonard.
Some 100 county residents who had come to the Ringgold County courthouse as possible jurors in the first murder trial in Ringgold County in many years were sent home Monday afternoon when the case was settled through a plea bargain.
Aaron Hays, 21, of Creston pleaded guilty to one count of Class C felony child endangerment and one count of misdemeanor child endangerment to bring the case to a close without going to trial. Hays was charged in the death of 15 month old Bailey Graham of Diagonal.
Brandon Yoder of Mount Ayr was named the MVP of the Small School West team in Iowa Baseball Coaches Association All-Star series in Sioux City last week.
A Mount Ayr team won the District 12 four lady scramble which was held Wednesday August 4 at the Nishna Hills Country Club in Atlantic. First place went to the Mount Ayr team of Karon Giles, Deb Larson, Katie Still and Becky Dolecheck. They shot a six-under-par score of 63.

Ten Years Ago

The annual twins, triplets and more contest was held on the opening day of the Iowa State Fair last week. For the third year in a row Jillian and Tessa Kniep won the “Least Alike” in the 9-10 year old division.
Three Raiderette softball players have been honored with inclusion on the POI all conference teams.
Senior Paige Daughton was named first team infielder, while sophmore Kirsten Dolecheck and freshman Tessa Shields were named to second team as outfielder and pitcher, respectively.
Marriage: June 14, Landi McFarland and Andrew Livingston.
Birth: August 3, a son, Jase, to Miranda Zollman and Shawn Young.
