One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, September 24, 1924.)
The annual powwow given by the Mesquakie Indians on the reservation in Tama county the last week of August drew an immense crowd the first two days, the rain spoiling the third day.
Members of various other Indian tribes were present to witness the big event, among them several families of Oote, a Ponca and Kiowa from Oklahoma, Pottawattamies and a Kickapoo from Kansas, several car loads of Winnebagoes from Nebraska and Wisconsin, and a brilliant little Hopi Indian from Arizona. There was also present one Sioux from it’s reservation in South Dakota, who acted and looked as though he felt perfectly at home among the Mesquakies with whom for many generations his tribe had been engaged in deadly war.
William Kimble, proprietor of the shoe repair shop on Depot Street purchased Monday the building and lot formerly owned by C.L.V. Thompson, one block north of the northeast corner of the square. Mr. Kimble expects to stucco the building.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Mount Ayr Vets close successful baseball season. They won 18 games and lost 10. The team closed a successful season Sunday by defeating Van Wert 11-2, on the Van Wert Diamond.
Skarda on the mound for Mount Ayr struck out eight and allowed 8 hits, while Geist fanned six and gave up 13 hits. Hannon led the batting attack with a double and three singles, with Newton close behind with a double and two singles.
All the pupils in the third grade are writing letters to Jerry Dulany who is in the hospital with pneumonia.
Nancy Terwilliger and Sybil Denhart are the captains in the 4th grade arithmetic race. A point is scored for each perfect arithmetic paper. This week Sybil’s team is in the lead. Sybil Denhart, Nancy Terwilliger, Ellen Spurrier and Michael Warin made perfect spelling scores.
Marriage: Sunday Bessie Sissel and Edward Giles were united in marriage…August 31, Shirley Smith and Byron Guilliams.
Births: Born to Mr. and Mrs. Dale Lash, a girl…September 10, a son,Timothy, to Mr. and Mrs. Tim Staats.

Fifty Years Ago

Loren Ibbotson of Tingley was elected president of the board of directors of the Mount Ayr Community school board at the organizational meeting held September 16. He will succeed Richard Weehler who served as president during the last year.
Three Ringgold county 4-H exhibitors attended the dairy show held in conjunction with the AR-SAR-BEN Livestock Exposition at Omaha, NE on September 21. Participants were Denis and Linda Link of Mount Ayr, children of Mr. and Mrs. Algie Link and Leigh Pollock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Pollock.
Howard Nickles and Melvis Eighmy found some memntos from 1909 in a bottle when busting up some concrete at the Eighmy Monument Co. in Mount Ayr.
Dr. Collus Lawhead fired a 9-under par 99 to capture the annual Mount Ayr Golf and Co. Club membership tournament Sunday. A field of 37 golfers participated in the event in ideal weather.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Ayr Days royalty for the past weekend were Dara Creveling queen and first runner up, Kelsey Greenman.
A Creston man was ordered to spend up to twelve years in prison and pay fines and restitution of almost $18,000 when he was sentenced on two child endangerment counts in Ringgold county. In a plea bargain, Aaron Hays plead to the felony and misdemeanor charges. He had originally been charged with 1st degree murder in the death of 15 month old Bailey Graham.
Former MACHS baseball standout, Brooks Brown has signed a national letter of intent to play baseball at Highland Community College in Highland, KS.
Marriage: July 31, Amanda Schlapia and Jason Heck.
Birth: September 2, a daughter, Mercadez, to Mick and Robin Birkenholtz.
Ten Years Ago

Wanted: $10,000 reward, theft ring operating in area. To the best of anyone’s knowledge the spree started near hunting season early this year, while the ground was still frozen. Returning absentee landowners began noticing items missing from their hunting properties; camper trailers broken into, electricity boxes broken and phone lines cut. High end items including boats and ATVs were among the first things reported taken from Worth Co., MO. As the year progressed, Taylor Co., IA began to report similar break-ins in rural areas.
Homecoming queen candidates chosen: Hannah Glendenning, Allie Shields, Shelbie Greene, Christiana Overholtzer and Ashton Johnson. King candidates are: Joe Ricker, Jake Ricker, Tucker Winemiller, Lincoln Martin, and Riley Weehler.
Births: September 7, a daughter, Kallie, to Drew and Billie Larsen…September 8, a daughter, Savannah, to Ethan and Katie Wambold…September 10, a daughter, Carson, to Justin and Chelsey Kuonen.
