One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, October 1, 1924.)
Voters of Ringgold County who have been anticipating an opportunity at the general election Tuesday, November 4, to vote for or against the proposal to issue bonds for the purpose of building a court house must wait until some future date to decide the question which is of vital importance to the people of the county.
Notice of election on a bond proposition must be published 4 weeks before the date of election, and since the first publication must be 30 days before the date upon which the proposition is submitted, there will not be time to pursue the course provided by law.
Disclosure: Lamoni has the unique distinction of having the only “smokeless” band in Iowa. Not one of the twenty-one musicians is addicted to the use of tobacco.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

J.B. Willey, chief of Mount Ayr Volunteer Fire Department, was elected president of the Iowa Firemen’s Association at the 22nd annual convention which closed Wednesday at Spencer.
Charles Morton assumed his duties Thursday as district manager of the Iowa Southern Utilities Company with headquarters at Mount Ayr. He succeeds W.F. Hutchinson who served the district for nearly seventeen years.
Colored pictures taken by the Aubrey Kirkpatricks, while on vacation trip through the west, will be shown Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Wishard Chapel. The pictures are educational and serve to show the wonderful handiwork of God.

The Mount Ayr Raiderettes moved into district softball finals virtue of a 5-2 win over Creston at Orient Tuesday night.
The Mount Ayr girls were never behind in the game. They scored single runs in the second and third innings, then pushed a cross three in the 5th for the victory. DeeDee Frost was tagged for six hits, but walked only two and had good support in the field to register the victory.
Jean Irving and Diane Wilson led the attack with two hits each, including a lead-off double by Irving.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

A $60,000 grant will mean safer county playgrounds.
The Ringgold County Conservation Board has received the grant from the Roy J. Carver Trust as one of eight southern Iowa counties receiving money.
Six cites have been selected in Ringgold County for playground renovation. They include Redding Community Park, Diagonal Fogle Recreation Area, Tingley Community Park, Kellerton Community Park, Fife’s Grove Park and Poe Hollow Park.
Dr. Keith Miller of Mount Ayr was inducted as president of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association at the annual convention of the group in Ames September 16-18.
Two Ringgold County families were among 275 farm families presented with the Century Farm Award at the Iowa State Fair by Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Patty Judge.
They were the James McCreary farm of Mount Ayr and the Derald and Rollin Noble farm of Mount Ayr.

Ten Years Ago

A trio of Ringgold County Veterans will take part in an honor flight to Washington, D.C., next week. They are Harold Cooper, Jim Hullinger and Lorrie Haver.
Ground breaking ceremonies for the new PCSB building being constructed on the old Romano’s Pizza site on Hwy 2 in Mount Ayr were held last week.
