Iowa was admitted into the union in 1846. In 1847 a colony from Holland was located in Marion County named Pella.
That was the first foreign colony established after Iowa became a state. This bit of history prompted Prof. Royal Holbrook, of the extension department at Ames, in an address before the Chamber of Commerce in Pella the other night, to remind that body that it owed a duty to the state in maintaining something of a permanent character that is really Dutch~something that will perpetuate for all time the origin of the brave band of immigrants who braved all manner of hardships that they might establish themselves in this land of opportunity.
Prof. Holbrook suggested a real Holland windmill to be erected of permanent material at a conspicuous place in the city park. The appeal by Mr. Holbrook met with much favor by the assembled pioneers of the long ago, and no doubt the suggestions will be carried out.
