One Hundred Years Ago

A veritable Republican landslide at yesterday’s election was indicated by early returns received by wireless during the night and confirmed by messages received today.
Messages received in the early hours of the morning brought the information that New York newspapers were predicting Coolidge would have 400 votes in the electoral college, a margin of 134 over the 266 required to elect.
State inspectors under jurisdiction of the Department of Agriculture have been given strict orders in a recent bulletin to arrest all bakers who do not stamp upon the wrapper in plain figures the weight of every loaf of bread sold.
“In the case of small bakeries using a plain wrapper or stock printed wrappers upon which no net weight is branded, we will permit them to use an insert slip providing it is not smaller than 3×6 inches, and that the name of the bakery and it’s location, also wet weight, is printed on this insert slip in large prominent type.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

The Armour Creameries plant in Mount Ayr was closed Saturday by order of Armour officials in Chicago.
Twenty-two persons were affected by the shut down. The plant was opened in Mount Ayr in July of 1946, following the destruction of the Leon plant by fire.
Lanore Bullock, Louise Walker, Betty Powell, and Arlene Butts complied the 4 top books selected by the 4-H committee Tuesday October 25. Yvonne Austin was selected in the group of 15 years and older to enter the state contest with the best home furnishing record book.
Notice is hereby given that arrests will be made and fines imposed on persons violating section 4 of ordinance No. 37, which provides penalties for unlawful depositing or throwing of leaves, trash, and debris on the streets of Mount Ayr. Residents are also warned against burning of leaves along curbing and on surfaced streets. Births: Sunday morning a son, Robert, to Mrs. Wilma Stewart.
Fifty Years Ago

Kenneth Hunt has been named to the board of directors of the Mount Ayr Community school district, replacing Dr. Roy Fell, who resigned when he moved out of the director district he was representing.
Governor Robert Ray presented his “Governor’s Leadership Award” to Bill Coleman of Kellerton, IA for Coleman’s leadership of Kellerton’s community betterment program.
Max Buckner, Kansas City Life Insurance Co. agent, has rented office space in the Warin Law Office building effective November 1. He will be at his new location Monday and Tuesday mornings from 10-12.
MACHS has a real celebrity now. Marla Wilkins appeared on the Mary Brubker Show on October 28. Mr. French even set up a TV in 412 so others could watch the show.

A Mount Ayr couple is receiving rabies vaccine after bats were found in their bedroom which were found to be carrying rabies. Steve and Vickie Loomis killed the bats that were flying around the house. The bats were tested at Iowa State University and found to have rabies.
Dr. Duane Mitchell of Mount Ayr has spent some time over the last year putting together a short story about his experience in World War II as a navigator and prisoner of war.
Daughter, Cherri Bailey and son, Steve Mitchell, inspired Mitchell to record what he remembers so the family will have an accurate record for years to come.
An actress with Ringgold County ties is starring in a new movie “Boys Don’t Cry.”
Hillary Swank, who has several relatives in Ringgold County, has starred in such movies as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and The Next Karate Kid” and has worked on the TV series “Beverly Hills 90210.”

Following Friday’s victory over SE Warren October 24, Mount Ayr Raider co-head coaches Delwyn Showalter and Derek Lambert marked their 100th win.
Eugene McAlexander of Beaconsfield recently completed twenty-five years of service as a National Weather Service Cooperative Weather Observer.
Senate candidate, Joni Ernst visited Mount Ayr last week as part of a 99 county bus tour of the state.
The Mount Ayr seventh grade Raider football team concluded their season undefeated with the 36-14 win over Clarinda Tuesday.
