Raymond Eugene Peppmeier

Raymond Eugene Peppmeier, age 87, the son of Laurence Ray and Ruth Josephine (George) Peppmeier, was born October 1, 1937, in Clarke County, Iowa. He passed away on October 28, 2024, at his Decatur, Iowa home.
Raymond’s family lived in Clarke County, Iowa until they moved to Ringgold County, Iowa when he was five years old. He attended and graduated from Beaconsfield High School in 1956. After school he farmed then worked at Kniep Packing House before returning to farming. On June 30, 1963, he married Julia Ann Hunt in the United Methodist Church in Ellston, Iowa. They were blessed with two children, son, Robert “Bobbie” in 1964, born in Mount Ayr, Iowa and daughter, Ann in 1966, born in Oregon. While living in Oregon, Raymond worked as a supervisor at a dog food cannery company. The family moved back to Decatur County, Iowa in 1973, and settled in their current home in 1982.
In December of 1980, Raymond started working in the maintenance department of Decatur County Hospital in Leon, Iowa. After retirement in 2000, he worked at the Osceola Country Club as a grounds keeper before he started his own mowing business. He and Julie took care of the Decatur, Palestine, Woodmansee, and Shy Cemeteries in addition to mowing many private yards. Raymond always said he mowed 52 acres weekly. At age 80, he slowed down to just a few yards.
In what free time Raymond had he enjoyed John Deere tractors, watching cowboy movies, and taking care of his own property. They attended Trinity Christian Church.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Dwayne Peppmeier; son, Bob Peppmeier; infant granddaughter, Carrie Ann Erickson; grandson, Justin Peppmeier; and sisters-in-law, Reba Potee and Virginia Smith. Survivors include his wife, Julie Peppmeier of Decatur, Iowa; daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Donnie Erickson of Paton, Iowa; granddaughter, Sarah Erickson of Paton; daughter-in-law, Robin Tourville and family; granddaughter-in-law, Laura Peppmeier; great grandson, Peyton Ray Peppmeier; sisters-in-law, Gloria Peppmeier and Linda Hunt; brothers-in-law, Bob Hunt, Ernie Smith, and Brent Potee; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Mary Mothershead and the late Oliver Mothershead of Leon; and other relatives and many friends.
A memorial service was held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 2, 2024, with Pastor Terry D. Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in the Decatur Cemetery, Decatur, Iowa.
