One Hundred Years Ago

Will improve mail service~In response to petitions numerously signed by patrons of the Mount Ayr, Benton, and Diagonal post offices, an inspector visited the three offices about 10 days ago and Sunday there was received at the Mount Ayr and also at the Diagonal post office instructions to advertise for bids to carry the mail between the two points.
On November 1 the patrons of Saltzman school gathered at the school house at 8 o’clock and were entertained by a short program given by teacher Miss Ferne Miller and pupils. After the program the house was called to order by the president of the PTA, Mrs. Bessie Egly.
New officers for the year were elected as follows: president, Mrs. John Mosier; vice president, Mrs. Guy Tedrow; secretary, Mrs. Simon Egly; treasurer, Mrs. Guy Bradley.
Marrige: November 7, Blanche Nevill and L.S. Benson…Saturday, John Slavik and Alma Nata…Saturday, Milton Siemiller and Freida Munn.
Births: November 6, son to Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Moore…November 8, a son, Howard, to Mr. and Mrs. J.A. McNerney. .

A brand new home refrigerator so skillfully designed that it packs almost 7 1/2 cubic feet of convenient storage space inside a tiny looking cabinet, will be on display Friday November 8 at the showroom of the Roe Implement Co. The new small refrigerator is only 4 1/2 foot high and approximately 2 feet wide yet it has a full width freezer locker that holds 35 pounds of frozen food. Another feature is a built in bottle opener.

Birth: November 10 a daughter, Barbara, to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Seifret…November 9, a daughter, to Mr. and William Tridle.

Eighth grader Julie Harover was named winner in the Bill Riley Talent Show staged Monday night in the high school gym. Selected along with Julie were Karen Weeda, second and Alan Ibbotson and David Perry, tied for third.
Postmaster General E.T. Klassen announced that the Postal Service intends to discontinue delivery of unpaid mail.
Greg Gienapp, Easter Seals’ regional director for southwest Iowa, has announced the appointment of Maralyn Schlapia of Mount Ayr as 1974-75 Easter Seal chairman for Ringgold County.
Marriage: August 24, Kathy Schafer and Syd Comer.
Births: November 12 a son, Ryan, to Mr. and Mrs. John Crawford…November 14, a son, Roger, to Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Gillispie…November 14, a daughter, Rebecca, to Mr. and Mrs. David Neas.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Don’t burn that pile of leaves or the stubble on that field. In fact don’t burn anything outdoors in Ringgold County.
Ringgold County is very dry after a long period without any rain and the fire departments have been being called to fires which have gotten out of control.
Damage to several electrical appliances in Diagonal occurred Friday, November 5, as a result of a power surge that took place in the early afternoon hours. A substantial surge of energy came through power lines, zapping several items and affecting about 15 customers.
Postal carrier Dan Sheil of Mount Ayr was presented with a pin and certificate honoring his 25 years of service with the US Postal Service.
Hauglands do well on karts. A Mount Ayr father-son go-kart racing duo have had a successful racing season this past summer. Jeff and Blake Haugland had a very good year in racing with eight feature wins, 16 top three finishes, five races out of the top five placings and only one did not finish.

The 11-1 Mount Ayr Raider football team ventures into uncharted waters this week as they play in the Class A football semi-finals against Logan~Magnolia Friday at the UNI-Dome.
The Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service announced the selection of Cynthia “Cindy” Allen as the October 2014 Iowa AmeriCorps member of the month.
Major DeAnna Faris Pennings was the keynote speaker at the Mount Ayr Community schools Veteran’s Day observance. Faris is a 1993 graduate of MACHS.
Births: October 29, a son, Peyton, to Shelby Mullen and Zach Robinson.
