One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, January 21, 1925.)
The train service on the Great Western railroad has been considerably improved, effective January 18 by the addition of train #5 which arrives in Diagonal at 1:49 p.m. leaving Des Moines at 11:25 a.m.
This train is a mail train and brings the Des Moines evening papers to Mount Ayr via the new star route at 4 p.m. This is quite an accommodation to the patrons of the of the Mount Ayr post office, as these papers did not arrive until 5:45, an it was often as late as 6:30 before they were distributed at the office in case the train was late.
The fifth anniversary of the 18th amendment (prohibition) to the constitution of the United States was observed by the Mount Ayr Union and the churches, by holding a union meeting at the UP Church on sabbath evening at which time the program was published last week was enthusiastically carried out. Mrs. Irving, president of the Mount Ayr Union presided. Mrs. Hillhouse, of Delphos, county president, gave the historical address which was well delivered. Rev. Williams followed with a fine address on “The Effect of the Law”. Rev. Kirkenhall gave an interesting comparison with former years, followed by Prof. Hammersly, who spoke on “Temperence Education in Schools.”
Editor George Shepherd announced the suspension of his paper, the Mount Ayr Journal last week and will conduct an exclusive job printing establishment. The Journals was one of the oldest democratic newspapers in this part of Iowa.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Rex Galloway, of Redding, is the 4-H member in Ringgold county who will receive the purebred gilt to be awarded by the Mount Ayr Lions Club. He will be presented a registered, bred Chester White gilt in the near future, since this is the breed of his choice.
Two young men from Ringgold county enlist in Air Corps January 5 and are now training in Texas. Thomas Stull, 17 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Stull of Mount Ayr and 18 year old Benjamin Moler of Redding.
R.E. Vanatta is recovering from injuries sustained last Wednesday morning when he was attacked by a ram at his residence property.
George Jackson, who for several years has been employed by the Mount Ayr Cleaners, assumed his duties Monday as bookkeeper for the Carr Chevrolet Company.
Weldon C. Main assumed his duties Monday as car salesman for the Williams Auto Company. Mr. Main was formerly employed as bookkeeper for the Carr Chevrolet.

Fifty Years Ago

The Southern Iowa Trolley, senior citizen and handicapped transportation system began operating in Ringgold county Monday. A 12 passenger minibus is providing service for the general travel needs of persons 60 years and over and rides to and from the Challenge Center for the handicapped.
An open house will be held Sunday at the Mount Ayr Health Care, Inc. located on Hwy 2 just east of the Shamrock Cafe. According to owner L.W. Gross, the open house for adults only will be held from 1-5 p.m.
Judy Kiburz of Tingley and Kenny Brown of Diagonal, received awards as outstanding 4-H leaders from Mount Ayr Lions Club president Dan Cunning at the awards dinner January 14.

Fatal fire kills four members of McNear family. It was Ringgold county’s worst fire disaster in over 50 years. Four Mount Ayr residents died in an early morning blaze Sunday morning in a tragedy that was felt deeply across the community.
Reigning as king and queen over the Diagonal homecoming festivities Friday night wee king Brian Gunsolley and queen Kelli Goodale.
Ringgold county auditor Paula Richards turned in her resignation to the Ringgold County Board Of Supervisors Monday January 17. Richards has accepted another job as Ringgold County Supportive Services fiscal administrator.
Mount Ayr has a new street~Kneedler Street. That was the name the city council approved for the new gravel street which connects N. West Street and N. Taylor Street in the north part of Mount Ayr. The street is named for Jerry Kneedler, long-time city employee who died recently.

Construction crews work on putting a new communications tower at the intersection of Hwy 2 & 169 west of Mount Ayr Tuesday.
State representative Cecil Dolecheck and newly elected state senator Mark Costello will meet constituents and answer questions at a legislative coffee Saturday January 24.
Kaitlyn Klommhaus and Blake Butler were named Diagonal’s Homecoming queen and king following the girls and boys basketball game victories Friday night.
Birth: January 7, a son, Rowan, to Burt and Molly Murphy.
