One Hundred Years Ago

Dr. F.H. Landes of Benton purchased Monday the office building on the west side of the square belonging to Dr. William Horne Estate and expects to move to Mount Ayr as soon as possible.
Gas was 18 1/2 cents a gallon in Tingley this week.
Representative Graham of Wapello county introduced a resolution complying with the provision of the state constitution for amending that document, having for its purpose the elimination of the word “male” in dealing with the eligibility of persons for holding office.
With the passage of his act by the present general assembly and the ratification of the amendment by the voters at a legally qualified election women will be eligible to sit in the house and senate as members thereof.
The 40th general assembly passed a bill making conviction three times for the same offense worthy of a penitentiary sentence. Judge Applegate of Guthrie Center holding court temporarily in Des Moines, was the first judge in Iowa to impose this sentence, a bootlegger having been convicted twice previously was proven guilty of the 3rd in his court and was sentenced to 3 years in the penitentiary.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Raymond Houk, 20 years of age, of Maloy, was found dead yesterday morning about 11:30 o’clock in his car which was parked on a country road, one and one half miles north and one mile west of Maloy. Death was caused from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Also in the car was Fern Parker, 18 years of age, who was still alive but suffering from the effects of the poisoning and from exposure. Houk, driving a group of young people from Maloy, had gone to Gravity Tuesday evening to attend a basketball game between Gravity and Maloy. They returned to Maloy about 11 p.m. leaving the young people at their various homes. Miss Parker was the last to be delivered home when they apparently had some type of car trouble. Miss Parker was still in intensive care and couldn’t be questioned at this time.
George and David Irving spent Sunday in Des Moines attending a clothiers convention at the Hotel Fort Des Moines.
Miss Belle Sickels, who is attending the NWMS college at Maryville, MO, has pledged Sigma, Sigma Sigma sorority. Miss Sickels is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rex Sickels of Mount Ayr and a freshman at college majoring in elementary education.

Fifty Years Ago

Ex-resident on scene during bank hold up. Neil Toland, who became prominent early this week in connection with a picture taken of a bank robber in Des Moines, has been identified as a former Mount Ayr resident, and the grand nephew of Mary Boyles.
Toland, 19 year old Iowa Methodist hospital receiving clerk, who lives at 730-16th Street, happened to be at the National Bank of Des Moines at 9 a.m. Monday, February 3, when a man reportedly walked in, pulled his gun and said, “this is a hold-up.”
Dr. Collus Lawhead, local dentist, will direct the Ringgold Singers and Choral Club members this year as they prepare for a spring concert.
Snowy weather and slick streets and roads continue to plague Ringgold county drivers as six accidents have been reported to the sheriff’s office here.
Jayne Ferguson of Tingley was installed Saturday evening January 11 as Worthy Matron of Mount Ayr Chapter #356, Order of the Eastern Star.
Trudy Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Smith of Mount Ayr was installed as Worthy Advisor of Mount Ayr Assembly 160, Order of Rainbow for Girls during ceremonies held January 26.
Del Worthington son of Mrs. Ruby Worthington and the late Jim Worthington, in January, assumed ownership of the Hwy Grocery and Liquor store in Grant City, MO.

Camille Jackson of Kellerton will be the new superintendent of the Clearfield school.
Mount Ayr quiz bowl team won the Pride of Iowa conference championship last week. Team members include senior, Morgan Dredge; junior, Amy Hynek, Janice Weddle, Elijah Terrell; sophmore Sean Kilgore and freshman Clara Terrell.
Josh Rusk of Clearfield recently received his Eagle Scout award, the highest award in Boy Scouts of America.
Thieves who made away with a pickup truck load of antiques and other items from the Eddie and Bessie Austin farm in Ringgold county may have been seen traveling away from the scene heading towards Creston about 7:55 a.m. January 24. The Austins were not home at the time of the burglary. They are retired farmers and spend the winters in Texas, according to Sheriff Bennett.
Senior Kylene Stamps was honored at homecoming for hitting the 1,000 career points record in basketball. Stamps hit the mark during the first game of the season for the Diagonal Maroonettes.

Ten Years Ago

The 2015 Hall of Fame class announced ~ Raymond Baker, Larry Giles, Mark Larsen and Chet Roed.
The snowstorm that hit Saturday dumped 10” of snow in Ringgold county making travel very difficult Saturday evening and Sunday. The storm followed unseasonably warm temperatures last week that almost reached 60 degrees.
Members of the 1988 state champion girls track team were honored Friday night at the Foundation Night sponsored by the Mount Ayr Community Foundation.
Team members attending were Jenny Shields O’Brien, Jill Taylor Weehler, Jamie Jones Boos, Jody Shields Lipcamon, Tracie Larson Knoll, Kim McGinnis Foster, Dawn Huff Elliott and Ann Foltz Semrad.
Births: January 20, a son, Carter, to Trent Jenkins and Kristi Larson…January 28, a son, Parker, to Taylor Schaffer and J.J. Chumbly.
