One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, February 18, 1925.)
Country School News~District #2, Grant township, Lela Vaughn teacher. Our school has a new stove which adds greatly to the appearance of the room.
We had four visitors this month. They were Ruth Bailey, Harriett Bailey, Lois Whitmore and J.B Routh. With an enrollment of seven pupils, four were neither absent or tardy during the month. They were Ralph Bailey, Lee Bailey, Clyde Bailey and Millard Ewalt. Lee Bailey and Clyde Bailey have had perfect attendance so far this year.
Senator Romkey of Burlington, come forward with a bill that would make beauty doctors, beauty parlor operators and those engaged in beauty culture pass an examination by a commission named by the governor and those passing such examinations would be given a license that would make a profession out of their calling. The bill only applies to beauty doctors working on women and children and not to barbers.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Wilber Wagenknecht, substitute rural mail carrier out of Mount Ayr, received head injuries Thursday afternoon when the jeep he was driving collided with an Armour Creameries truck.
On the recommendation of the Iowa State Medical Society and by the concerted efforts of members of the Mount Ayr Businessmens’ Club in obtaining office and housing facilities, the Doctors Barrett, the man-wife M.D. team trained for general practice of medicine and surgery, have selected Mount Ayr as the community in which they will locate and engage in the practice of their profession.
Hugh Terwilliger spent Friday night and Saturday with Glen Sickels.
Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Howie and Bud Wilson and family spent Sunday at the Bert Wilson home.
The Myers farm, consisting of 321 acres and located 4 miles southwest of Kellerton was sold last week to Fred Trimble for $36,525.
Marriage: January 21, Mildred Goldsberry and Charles Newell.
Births: February 10, a daughter, Karen, to Mr. and Mrs. Willard Edgerton…February 4, a daughter, Rebecca, to Mr. and Mrs. Dean Schreiber.

Fifty Years Ago

Stacy Cunning daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Cunning and Stephanie Warin daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Warin, will appear at 5 o’clock this Saturday on the Bill Riley Talent Search carried on channel 13 WHO-TV.
Old Man Winter finally got around to Ringgold county area the first of the week and residents found themselves with the heaviest snowfall of the year. Some 7-8” of the white stuff fell Sunday night and Monday night.
A break-in and theft of eight new tires at the Kellerton Oil Company warehouse in down town Kellerton was discovered about 2:30 a.m. Saturday by deputy Jerry Jones of Diagonal. The deputy was on patrol at the time and followed car tracks to a farm about four miles north of Kellerton where the missing tires were found. James Clough, 22, of Ankeny was arrested and charged with larceny and appeared later that morning in magistrate court.
Three Mount Ayr Raider wrestlers advance to district wrestling tournament to be held in Audubon this Friday and Saturday. Those advancing are as follows: Curt Braby, Mike Gilliland, and Chuck Knapp.
Two members of the 1974-75 Raider basketball team were named to the first team all conference for the Tall Corn Conference over the weekend. Seniors Rich Johnson and Crae Geist made the honor group and Brian Nieman gained second team honors.
Johnson was both the conference’s leading scorer with 21 points and top rebounder with 15 per game.
Geist averaged 14.5 points per game and 12 rebounds.
Two Raiderettes gained 1st team honors on the Tall Corn Conference all-conference team. Senior DeeDee Frost and junior guard Jenifer Parker were named to the select group. Frost carried an 18.5 scoring average while Parker hauled down an average of 6.3 rebounds.

The north side of the Mount Ayr Community elementary school may soon have a new look if the concept drawing for a new expansion of the elementary school is built.
Ringgold county has a new county auditor after Kimberly O’Mailia took the oath of office at the courthouse Tuesday morning.
Andrea Taylor, daughter of Randy and Karen Taylor of Mount Ayr, was installed as Worthy Advisor of Mount Ayr #160 International Order of Rainbow for Girls January 12.
News From the Armed Services: Jordan Blunck, son of Donna and Kent Blunck of Des Moines, is going through Army boot camp training in Fort Binnings, GA.
Friendship Mealsite at Tingley will celebrate it’s 26th anniversary Tuesday, February 29.
Birth: February 18, a son, Brayden, to Travis and Niccole Swank.

Ten Years Ago

Mount Ayr 285 pounder Joe Ricker, a senior, will carry a #1 state ranking and an undefeated record into the Class 1A state wrestling tournament that opens today.
NASA and its International Space Station partners have announced the crew members, including Ringgold county’s own Peggy Whitson, for upcoming missions to the space station. Whitson will be aboard Soyuz49 when it lifts off from a Russian launch pad in December 2016 as part of Expedition 50.
