One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, February 25, 1925.)
After being appealed to by car owners for food, clothing, and fuel to last them during the winter, the board of supervisors of Fayette county drafted and published the following resolution, “If such persons are too poor to buy food or clothing, but with money enough to buy an automobile and gasoline, such persons will no longer receive support from the county.
Mrs. Mary Moore who had been visiting relatives at Skidmore, Mo., came to Mount Ayr Wednesday and spent the day with her son Henry Greenrod, before returning to her home in Kellerton.
Married: Last Wednesday Lois Dukes and Mr. McConnel…Last week Nellie Caywood to Mr. Snodgrass, February 7, Lillian Novak and Kenneth Markley.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Seven men and women between the ages of 80-94 years who are being cared for in the Pottorff Nursing Home in Mount Ayr were honored guests at a birthday party given Wednesday last week by Mrs. Eda Pottorff.
Those honored were Jimmy Sharp 94, George Eaton 91, Alice Bailey 91, William Foster 90, Lucy Carlson 90, Sarah Faris 89, Bonnie Miller and George Manden 80.
E.L. Thrift, oldest resident in Ringgold County will observe his 97th birthday Thursday, February 23. Mr. Thrift who has mad his home in Diagonal for a number of years, lives alone and enjoys reasonably good health.
Student Ayr: Fifth Grade, we had a very enjoyable time at our Valentine party. After we opened the Valentine boxes and passed out the Valentines, Melvin Gray served red lollipops and John Combs served packages of gum. We also had pink heart cookies.
Mr. and Mrs. John Sickels moved last week to the farm formerly occupied by the Forest Mains.
Mount Ayr Raiders triumphed over Corydon Tuesday night in an overtime thriller with Stuck and Teale pacing the Raiders to victory with 16 points each.

Tom Perkins of Patterson and Marvin Perkins Jr. of Lamoni have been charged with larceny by Ringgold county sheriff Elbert Strange, after a six week investigation of the disappearance of soybeans from the Boyer brothers farm in Riley township.
A small plane piloted by a Des Moines man made an emergency landing at the Donald Goins farm northwest of Diagonal after dark Saturday evening when gasoline ran low and he was unable to make it to the Creston airport.
Lynne Keenan, 1973 graduate of MACHS, reigned as homecoming queen at Southwestern Community College Friday night. Miss Keenan is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Keenan.
Carol Lynn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stewaqrt Ellison of Mount Ayr has been named one of the top ten secretaries employed at the Pentagon at Washington, D.C.
An employee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, she has been employed at the Pentagon for the past five years.
Paul Fell was honored by the Mount Ayr Lions during the half-time of the recent Tarkio College~Nebraska Wesleyan basketball game, which was won by the Tarkio Owls 87-61. Fell scored 31 points and pulled down 15 rebounds during the game.
Marriage: February 1, Donna Dredge and Richard Elliott.
Births: February 23, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Starmer…February 25 a daughter, Amy, to Mr. and Mrs. Owen Heckathorn.

Brett Shields became the 5th MAC Raider to ever make it to the finals of the state wrestling tournament when he placed 2nd in the 119 pound class of Class 1A at the state wrestling tournament.
Recycling using a recycling bin is back for Ringgold county residents after many years when the service was not available. Recycling bin has been placed in the parking lot of the Mount Ayr Livestock.
Five Ringgold county speech participants will be taking part in the state speech contest at Abraham Lincoln high school in Des Moines March 18. Participants qualifying are Kyle Richardson, Joel Jennings, Sean Kilgore, and Amy Hynek of Mount Ayr and Abby Stephens of Diagonal.
Marriage: August 14, 1999, Nicole Landphair and David Opfer.

Senior 285 pound wrestler Joe Ricker finished second in the state championship last weekend. Ricker finishes his career for the Raiders with school records for career victories, pins, and team points.
Discussion and decisions centered on disposition/repurposing of the old hospital facility at the regular Ringgold County Hospital board meeting held Monday, February 16.
Tracee Knapp of Redding has been named as an advisory board member for the grassroots advocacy program Americans for Peace, Prosperity, and Security.
In a battle of two close communities, the Mount Ayr Raiders hosted the Diagonal Maroons in the first round of the Class 1A district basketball tournament Thursday February 19. The Maroons prevailed 61-45 to advance to the second round game against Murray Tuesday February 24 in Mount Ayr.
Birth: November 10, 2014, a son, Michael, to Tony and Abby Miller.
