One Hundred Nine Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, March 10, 1916.)
County Coroner Hannelly was called to the home of Mrs. Barbara Jezek, of Washington township, Wednesday afternoon in response to a telephone message announcing the fact that Joseph Honzatko, a farm hand, had been found dead on the farm of Mrs. Barbara Jezek, for whom he had been working for several months.
Dr. Hannelly left immediately for the scene and upon arriving summoned a jury composed of Fred Kokesh, C.F. Dolecheck, and Joe Jezek. After a thorough examination of the body, and hearing the evidence submitted a verdict of suicide was returned and the young man’s mother, who resides in Chicago was notified.
Politicians and others who have been contending that sixteen to one is a dead issue must revise their judgment since last Tuesday night, when Miss Big Orange Second, a brood sow in the herd of G.W. Sefrit and sons of Delphos, farrowed sixteen fine pigs and every one of them was saved. The only difficulty is that Mr. Sefrit is at a loss to know what to do with so many pigs in one litter.
Last Saturday at about noon the house occupied by Mr. Donielson about seven miles southeast of town in Poe township was totally destroyed by fire. The house owned by David Egly and valued at $600. was insured for $400.

Births: February 25, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Chet Adams…March 3, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Matthews.

Greene’s Skating Palace in Mount Ayr operated by Lowell Greene, will open the 1950 skating season Wednesday evening, March 15. Skating will start each evening at 7:30 o’clock. In connection with the roller rink, Mr. Greene announces the opening of the new “Roll-In” Cafe. Service will include sandwiches, French fries, pop, coffee, malted milks and doughnuts.
Marriage: March 2 Maxine Wilson and John Vanderflught.

Fifty Years Ago

For the second time in three years the Mount Ayr Raiders will play in the state basketball tournament for Class A schools to be held in Des Moines next week.
Recreation Hall is open for business. The activity going on in the building formerly occupied by Runyon’s Music Store on the southeast part of the square is setting in place of various games to be available in a recreation center being opened by Arvid Woollums. Included are two pool tables, pin ball machines, foozball, a duck shoot, and air hockey.
Two Masons from Mount Ayr are among those who will receive the 32nd degree in Scottish Rite Masonry at Des Moines Saturday March 15. They are Joel McClure and Gordon Parker.
Marriages: December 28, 1974, Virginia Yansen and Perry Brown.
Birth: March 7, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pollock.

Julie Davison has joined Ringgold County Farm Bureau Insurance as a career agent effective March 1. Formerly an employee of Mount Ayr Record News, Davison replaces Charlotte Lullmann at the Farm Bureau office in Mount Ayr.
Twenty-six years of food, fun, and fellowship was celebrated at Friendship Meal Site in Tingley, Tuesday February 29, with a program, special meal, gifts, guests and the works.
Five Ringgold county students will be taking part in the state individual speech contest at Lincoln high school in Des Moines Saturday. Representing MACHS will be Joel Jennings, Kyle Richardson, Amy Hynek, and Sean Kilgore. Abby Stephens will be representing Diagonal Community high school.
The annual Gene Sevier Cribbage Tournament was held Saturday afternoon at Clearview. Getting 1st place was Marvin Dillenburg who won all five games that were played. Jim McIntosh came in second with 587 points and 3rd place was Duane Poore with 572 points.
Diagonal’s Kylene Stamps was named to the Des Moines Register Class 1A all-state second team this week. Stamps a 5’7” senior, was honored for her outstanding career as a senior, averaging 22.4 points, nine rebounds per game.

Ten Years Ago

The Mount Ayr school board covered a large number of agenda items during it’s lengthy regular session Monday March 9. Major topics included proposals to move the preschool into the elementary building and to move 6th grade to the secondary building.
Kendra Friesz is the new Hy-Vee registered dietitian.
Seven Mount Ayr basketball players were named to the Pride of Iowa all-conference team released recently. Sophomore Tessa Shields was a unanimous first team selection, while senior Ashton Johnson and sophomore Kelcie Shields received second team recognition.
For the Raiders, junior Rhett Murphy was named first team and Nick Wurster received second team nod. Rounding out the all-conference picks are senior Riley Weehler and junior Kyle Dolecheck, who were honored on the all-academic team.
