Joyce G. Mitchell

Joyce G. Mitchell, daughter of William and Geraldine (Summa) Adams, was born February 12, 1924, at home in rural Gentry County, Missouri. Joy attended Grant City High School and graduated with the class of 1942.
On June 4, 1942, Joy was united in marriage to Duane E. Mitchell in Rockport, Missouri. To this marriage was born two children: Cherri and Stephen.
Soon after marriage, Duane entered into active service in the US Army. While Duane served on the battle fields, Joy helped pack rations for the service men. Joy also was a typist at Stephens Girls School. After Duane’s discharge from the Army, Joy and Duane settled into married life. Duane went onto medical school and became an M.D. The family moved to Mount Ayr where Duane had his medical practice, and Joy raised their children and cared for the home. As Duane was also the Ringgold County Medical Examiner, Joy would type up his autopsy reports for medical students. Joy loved her family and enjoyed their time both in Mount Ayr and at their lake home at Sun Valley Lake. She was a strong woman who cared for and looked after their needs.
Joy became a resident of the Mount Ayr Health Care Center and passed away there on March 27, 2025, at the age of 101 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, William & Geraldine Adams; husband Dr. Duane E. Mitchell; son Stephen Mitchell; son-in-law Verd Bailey; brothers William and James Adams.
Survivors include her daughter Cherri Bailey of Loveland, Colorado and daughter-in-law Cindy Mitchell of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren Chad (Vera) Hunt of Mount Ayr, IA, Neil (Suzanne) Hunt of New Bern, NC, Ryan (Jillian) Hunt of Salem, OR, Brooke (Casey) Marshall of Kansas City, MO, Kary (Adam) Wilson of Camas, WA, Michael (Katie) Mitchell of Merriam, KS, step-grandchildren Brad (Danielle) Bailey of Las Vegas, NV and Rebecca Bailey of Las Vegas, NV; great grandchildren Jared, Brett, Julia Hunt, Montana & Shayla Hunt, Evan & Scotty Marshall, Wren, Olive & Poppy Wilson, Cooper Mitchell; step-great grandchildren Grace, Ford & Faith Bailey, Erik Turner, Sophia Bailey; sister Rose Lee Catlin; other relatives and friends.
Services were held 11 a.m. Friday, April 4 at the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr is in charge of the arrangements.
