One Hundred Years Ago

King of booze making sentenced by Judge Fuller.
The extreme penalty provided by law was pronounced by Judge Homer A. Fuller against Walter Case, who last week in the district court of Clarke Co. was convicted of the crime of possessing instruments for the manufacture of liquor.
A few weeks ago Case was arrested by the sheriff of Clarke County and a raiding party, he had in his possession a large still and a quantity of liquor. The grand jury acted promptly and returned a indictment. Case pleaded not guilty and the trial ended in a conviction.
Fire of unknown origin completely destroyed the fine consolidated school building at Hatfield, MO last Friday morning.
The fire was discovered between 2 and 3 o’clock in the morning and had gained such a headway that nothing could be done to check the flames and the building and contents were completely consumed.
Lamoni down near the Missouri border in Decatur county, the seat of Graceland College, supported by the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a branch of the Morman church claims for its public schools that it has the largest department of band and orchestral music of any school of like size in Iowa. There ia an orchestra of 23 pieces, a band of eighteen and a violin ensemble numbering 40. J.H. Anthony, instructor, is in charge of the three groups.

Voters re-elect O.B. Mack as mayor, H. Fennema, J.E. Horne, James Mahan, Fred Daughton and Ed Price to council seats.
Funeral services for Capt. Paul McPherson will be held tomorrow Friday at 2 p.m. Captain McPherson was killed Thursday in the flaming crash of a B-50 Air Force bomber on a remote dessert area near Hyder, AZ. Capt. McPherson entered the Air Force during WWII and had served in that branch for approximately seven years.
Those having measles in our area are John, Jane Beamer, and Robert McCreary.

Winners in the Cub Scout pinewood derby March 25 were: 3rd, Craig Willis; 2nd Paul Glendenning; 1st Jerold Yearous and best design to Kelly Woollums.
Freezing temperatures and cold winds didn’t hold down attendance at Mount Ayr’s annual Easter egg hunt Saturday.
Mrs. Maralyn Schlapia, who headed up the committee of the VFW Auxiliary in charge estimated about 150 youngsters took part in the hunt, it was held at Judge Lewis Park.
Airman Suzanne K. Henry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Henry of Mount Ayr has bee selected for technical training in the U.S. Air Force wire maintence field at Sheppard AFB, TX.
A thrill of a life time came recently at the Dallas, TX furniture show when Mount Ayr residents Jake Dailey and wife Jerry, visited with the current Miss America, Shirley Cothran of Denton, TX.
A Redding woman gained top honors in singles bowling competition in the city tournament at Grant City recently. She is Mrs. Sanford Hunt who had a 527 scratch series to win her first 500 patch and a 225 patch.
Marriage: Deborah Allen and Terry Lippincott.
Birth: March 30, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. William Palmer.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Major awards were presented when the Mount Ayr community FFA chapter held its annual banquet Monday night. Some of the top awards went to Matt Gilliland, Richard Faris, Kyle Richardson, Amber Taylor, Adam Triggs and Jacque Baker.
The Family Resource Center held a pajama party Thursday for the kids in preschool and Head Start. The teachers along with the children dressed in their pajamas including hair rollers, bunny slippers, sleeping bags and teddy bears.
Four girls were the first in Mount Ayr Community high school history to take the conditioning tests following the winter weight lifting program. They are Mary Scharfenkamp, Rachel Haley, Carrie Quick and Courtney Graves.
Births: March 22, a son, Brenden, to Mr. and Mrs. William Hightshoe…March 30, a daughter, Addyson, to Mr. and Mrs. Mark Flammang.

Ten Years Ago

ISU chemical engineering alumni Dr. Joe Cunning was inducted into the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering Hall of Fame March 27. The brother of local businessman Dan Cunning, Joe was valedictorian of the 1954 graduating class of Mount Ayr community school.
Arion Award winners, Nessie Brand, Blake Roberts and Grant Staats were honored at Monday’s Merrill Perry band concert.
The coaches and parents of Omaha Elite Force basketball team put on a “Nothin But Net” basketball tournament in February. They collected donations at the weekend tourney in Olivia McGinnis-Taylor’s memory and made a $1,000 donation to the Nebraska Humane Socety in her name. Olivia is the granddaughter of Walt and Beverly McGinnis of Mount Ayr.
