Curtis Scott Braby

Curtis Scott Braby, 66, died Thursday, April 3, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family under the care of St. Croix Hospice.
Curt was born on December 16, 1958, in Mount Ayr, Iowa.  Following his graduation from Mount Ayr Community High School where he was a state champion heavy weight wrestler, he attended the University of Northern Iowa and wrestled for two years.  While he was at UNI, Curt met the love of his life, Denise Adams, and the couple was married on June 27, 1981, at the First United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls.  The couple was blessed with two children: Kale and Kassidi.  Curt served Louisa County for 30 years, first as a Deputy and for the last 10 years of his career as their Sheriff, retiring in 2010. While in law enforcement he worked endlessly to ensure the safety of others and did so with compassion and care.
His commitment to his community did not stop with serving and protecting, Curt served as the Morning Sun School Board President, Youth League, Lions Club and Booster Club.  He is a past president of the Iowa State Sheriffs’ and Deputies’ Association.  Curt is also a member of the Mount Ayr Hall of Fame as a past state wrestling champion.
While much of his career was spent supporting and serving others, he always found the time for his family. Curt coached both of his children’s youth league sports and never missed a game as they got older. He took pride in his yard and could be found working outside or working on a new house project on the weekends. Curt and Denise enjoyed spending time with their family, often at sporting events or an occasional date night.
Curt is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Denise; children, Kale Braby and Kassidi (Tim) Poots; grandchildren, Maverick, Carver, McCoy and Brenden; siblings, Carme Lilienthal, Cary (Debbie) Braby, Craig (Kathi) Braby, Casey (Melissa) Braby and Camie (Bill) Walters; and extended family and friends.  He is preceded in death by his mother and her husband, Isabelle (Wheelen) and Roland Buck; uncle, Earl Wheelen; brother-in-law’s, Todd Lilienthal and Dave Adams.
The memorial service for Curt was held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home.  The visitation was held from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday at the funeral home.  Inurnment will be at Fairview Cemetery, Cedar Falls.
