One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, April 8, 1925.)
Miss Florence Ohm was the victim of a very serious accident Tuesday evening when a number of young folk gathered to shivaree Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Minnick, who were trying to evade the crowd in his car.
They were all in the road. Miss Ohm became confused and ran in front of the car and was knocked down. No one seems to know just how it happened. She was unconscious several hours.
From Independence, Buchanan county, comes the report that Joseph Odren, civil war veteran, believed to be the last of the union army detail which assisted in the capture of Jefferson Davis, has just celebrated his 83rd birthday. Odren recalls vividly the day when the fleeing head of the southern Confederacy was seized near Macon, GA, dressed as a woman.
Sheriff Stephens was notified Sunday that a stirring plow was stolen from the Perry Brown farm in Riley township Saturday night. Automobile tracks were traced from the barnyard on the Brown farm to the Nate McChesney farm, a mile distant, where 60 rods of new wire was stolen.
Some evidence is in possession of the officers which may lead to the arrest of the thief.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Housing facilities for turkeys and 4,500 poults were destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning at the Alvin Tull place at the north edge of Tingley. The loss also included turkey feed.
Bill Spence of this city is one of the 85 member band of Drake University, Des Moines, which will tour Iowa, Nebraska, and Missouri, April 17-21. Bill who plays a baritone, will participate in 14 concerts and the program will include marches, semi-classical, classical and popular selections.
Leila, Juanita, and Lyndon Hacker of Mount Ayr visited Friday night through Sunday evening with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray James.
Contracts were offered this week to Superindent R.T. Kirby and all teachers in the Mount Ayr schools. All contracts provide for increases of $100 annual pay over last year.
Kathryn and Jimmy McCreary are sick with the measles.
Third Grade news~ Barbara Stuck celebrated her birthday anniversary by treating the classroom. Larry Sackett and Jimmie Marrs are out this week with the mumps.

Randal Lynch of Maloy was elected president of the Ringgold County Pork Producers at an organizational meeting held March 25. Terry Barnes of Lamoni was named vice-president and Jim McCreary secretary/treasurer.
Mrs. Wendall Jackson of Redding was elected president of the newly formed Ringgold County Cowbelles at a meeting held April 1 in the public library.
Mrs. Keith Cole has bought the Dairy Sweet located on the south edge of Mount Ayr on Hwy 2 from Bill Monaghan and received possession April 1st.
Area men form REC and Iowa Southern Utilities were among those answering an emergency call for help in repairing power lines damaged by wind and ice storm in parts of Iowa. The last week of March Robert “Hap” Richards, REC line foreman and three lineman, Lee Brand, Dwight Hickman and Max Smith took two service trucks and a boom truck and left about 4 a.m. Friday March 28 for Glidden, IA.

Twenty -Five Years Ago

Four Mount Ayr community FFA members received their Iowa Farmer degree at the state convention in Des Moines Saturday. Those receiving the degree were Kyle Richardson, Michael Baker, Chad Drake and Amber Taylor.
Bruce Jenner, 1976 Olympic decathlon gold medalist and entrepreneur, will return to Graceland College in April as both athletic and businessman. Jenner, who graduated from Graceland in 1973, will be on campus Friday April 14, for the dedication of the college’s new track being named in his honor.
A Mount Ayr elementary student is the first from the area to win 1st place in the Iowa State Wrestling AAU Championship tournament held in Cedar Rapids. Hans Larson, son of John and Diana Larson of Mount Ayr wrestled at 130 pounds in the B division (5th-6th grade). He is in sixth grade at Mount Ayr Community school.

Dick and Donna Elliott go Hollywood, after winning a national sweepstakes to attend the premiere of “The Longest Ride.”
A total of 104 runners took part in Saturday’s Live Healthy Iowa 5K run/walk organized by the Ringgold County Wellness Coalition.
Nathan Shervheim, son of Jan and Melinda Shervheim of Redding was awarded first place in the DAR America History contest for 8th graders. The contest was sponsored by the Nancy McKay Harsh Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
