One Hundred Thirty-Five Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, April 10, 1890.)
Ringgold county had no delegates at the Saloon Republican Convention of the 2nd of April. Let this fact be recorded to her credit.
Since the beginning of the Civil War, our government has paid out in pensions in round numbers $1,000,000,000. Ours is a generous government and grateful to her defenders.
A young man from Grant City, whose name we did not hear, stole $75 last week and came to Mount Ayr and “blowed part of it”. From here he went to Hopkins, MO where the officers took charge of him.
On Tuesday, April 1st, while driving in a wagon in company with someone from Wirt, Mr. Wm. Linkey fell from his wagon and soon died. There seemed to be no particular hurt, but because of the sudden jar the action of the heart ceased. He was about 50 years old.
The M.E. people and others in the vicinity of Benton propose at an early date to build a handsome church at that place. They now have a good safe subscription of $800, and it will doubtless be advanced to $1,200 after a thorough canvas. When built the church will be open to all the evangelical denominations. Such a house of worship has long been needed, in that neighborhood and it is hoped that all will take a good financial interest in the religious enterprise and push it on to completion.
Nicholas Uglo of Grant and a hero at Gettysburg, July 3, 1863, was in town on Tuesday.

Seventy-Five Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, April 13, 1950.)
Truman Dulany was elected town clerk with three votes, while C.E. Thompson received two votes. Daughton, Fennema and Price recently elected councilmen, voted in favor of Dulany, while Horne and Mahan, holdover councilmen cast their ballots for Thompson. Dulany will assume the duties Saturday of this week. He suceeds Thompson who has held the office since May 16, 1945.
The council voted to increase the salary of Band Director, Oren Ellmore from $350 to $500 in payment services rendered in conducting the band during the summer months.
New clothing store opens for business today. Baldner and Roe, clothiers, announce that the remodeling of their store has been completed and will open for business today.
Marriage: April 8, Cheryle Jackson and Edgar Collins…April 9, Shirley Boothe and Harold Sandage…April 8, Lavan Fry and Ralph Wederquist.
The Mrs. E.S. Downie 23 acre farm, one mile west of Mount Ayr was sold last Wednesday to Dale Schlapia.

Fifty Years Ago

Duane Glick has assumed his duties as Mount Ayr town clerk beginning April 1. Mr. Glick has been employed for the past ten years at Anderson Supply in Ellston.
Rudy Saville resigned his position as Mount Ayr chief of police during a meeting of the town council April 3. Bob Grune continues as security officer and has been sworn in as police chief.
Jim Walling, who has resigned as superintendent of schools at Grand Valley high school, has been awarded a doctoral fellowship at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada.
Birth: April 10, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Brooks…April 11, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Dale Bickel…April 13, a son, to Mr. and Mrs. Terry Zerbe.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

A second MACHS senior has been named as a state of Iowa scholar by the Iowa College Student Aid Commission.
Josh Rusk of Clearfield, son of Alan and Doreen Rusk, has been named a state of Iowa scholar for Taylor County. He joins Mandy Johnson of Mount Ayr, daughter of Scott and Cindy Johnson, who was named Ringgold County recipient of the honor.
The Mount Ayr Record News received two awards when the winners of the Iowa Newspaper Association better newspaper contests were announced at the press group’s convention in Des Moines.
LuAnn Jackson of the Record News staff received third place in the best ad designer category. The Record News also received third place in the contest for best series of advertisement for Citizen’s Bank in Mount Ayr.

Ten Years Ago

According to Bethany Republican Clipper, the Missouri Department of Conservation has confirmed a mountain lion was photographed in early February in Harrison county. A game camera captured the image of the large cat roaming a field in central Harrison County.
Ringgold county resident Sue Buck recently participated in her second mission trip through St. Johns Lutheran Church in Lombard, IL, to Nicaragua, where she spent three weeks.
Glendenning Motor Co. of Mount Ayr recently donated a set of CPR training units to Ringgold county EMA as part of National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation Program.
Obituary in this edition was Robert Eugene Adams.
