One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, April 22, 1925.)
Robbers intent upon wholesale looting visited the towns of Tingley, Shannon City, and Knowlton Friday night and escaped without leaving a clue to their identity.
Seven business houses in Tingley, two in Shannon City and one in Knowlton were entered, in most instances entrance being effected through the front door by use of crowbars stolen in the towns visited.
The door to the safe at Sheesley and Son’s General Store in Tingley was blown off, nitro glycerine being used and every indication was that the work was done by expert safe crackers.
Mr. Sheesley had left only a small amount of cash in the safe having banked late the night before and only about $6 was found by the robbers.
At the B.D. Weeda General Store about $110 was taken from the cash register and silks valued at between $50 and $60 were taken. At the Jones restaurant entrance was effected by breaking out a glass in the door and turning the spring lock from the inside. Here about $3 was taken from the cash drawer. At the Breckenridge store, the robbers found it not necessary to blow the safe in order to find the cash drawer as Mr. Breckenridge had taken the precaution to keep hanging over the door a sign which read, “This Safe Is Not Locked. Turn to the right 89.” Only a small amount of change had been left in the safe.
At the Day Carter Hardware store some small tools and some knives were missing, one of the knives bearing the well defined finger print being found at the Sheesley Store. The knife was sent by the officers to Des Moines where the fingerprint could be compared with records.
At the Farmers Elevator in Tingley between $5 and $6 was taken, the robbers overlooking a pocket book containing several bills/ Tools used by the robbers in Tingley were taken from the blacksmith shop.
At the lumber yard in Shannon City of which Charles Mapel is manager, the safe door was easily opened as the night lock was not used. The money drawer was opened by the use of a drill and punch and about $55 stolen. There was also evidence of an attempt to open the safe at the Farmers’ Cooperative elevator in Shannon City, but nothing of value was missing. Tools from the C.G.W. Tool House were taken by the robbers at Shannon.
The L.E. Yaryan store at Knowlton was broken into, but only a few small articles were missing.
The robbers were evidently professionals, who left no clue as to their identity. A star sedan was stolen from a garage in Afton the night of the robbery and was found parked in the street at Osceola the next morning. The theory was advanced that probably the robbers arrived in Afton the evening before, stole the car and used it in making the rounds of the towns and left it in Osceola, catching the train on the main line in that city, but this theory was exploded when Sheriff Marion Stephens interviewed members of the train crews who were on the trains which passed through Osceola that night and learned that no passengers were taken on at Osceola.
