One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, April 29, 1925.)
John Borroush of Omaha, NE, a brother of Fred Borroush of Tingley, shot and killed his wife Tuesday afternoon and then shot himself, both dying instantly. No cause for the deed is known.
On Tuesday of last week while plowing with five horses and mules in his field west of Diagonal, Walter Pine had a narrow escape with his life when the horses became entangled and he went out on the tongue to straighten them out and one of the mules knocked him down in front of the plow and began to get away and he was thrown in such a way that he could not get away from the blades of the plow, he was cut several times in the back and otherwise seriously injured.
Sample automobile number plates, the first ever made with convict labor in Iowa, have been received by W.M. Colladay of the state motor vehicle department. The plates have white numerals on a maroon background. They are being made at the men’s reformatory at Anamosa and are to be ready for delivery to all county treasurers before December 1.

Seventy-Five Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, April 27, 1950.)
The Mount Ayr Produce Co., owned by Billie Finch, was entered Thursday night approximately $1,360 were taken from a drawer in a roll top desk. The money in the padlocked drawer was made accessible by removing the back of the desk.
The large two-story house on he G. L. Allen 160 acre farm in Monroe township, was totally destroyed by fire about noon Friday. It is believed that the fire originated from a defective flue.
Many complaints have been received at my office regarding of hogs within the city limits of Mount Ayr. Those who are hogs are reminded that an ordinance provides that hogs must be kept at least 200 feet from a residence property and regardless of distance they must be kept in a sanitary conditon. O.B. Theodore Thompson has been elected superintendent of Diagonal schools for the coming year. Mr. Thompson comes here from Yarmouth, where he is finishing his fifth year.

Fifty Years Ago

There has been some interest in promoting a county-wide police protection system for Ringgold County. Such a proposal will be explained by representatives form the Southern Iowa Crime Commission.
Everett Reynolds recently retired after spending over 24 years as truck and equipment operator on the maintenance and construction crew of Rideta Electric Cooperative of Mount Ayr.
Women’s Lib has finally taken its course at MACHS! Diane Wilson has been selected as student council president for the school year. Scott French will be reigning vice-president; with Kelly Burright as secretary and Earl McAlexander as treasurer.
The school has received word that approximately $2,500 will be available for scholarships for graduates of the MACHS from the trust fund from the estate of the late Judge Lewis.
Marriage: March 8, Janet Oliver and Tim Irving.
Birth: April 24, a daugther, Lori, to Mr. and Mrs. Larry Davis.
Twenty-Five Years Ago

Kellerton Grasslands Bird Conservation Area has a new viewing platform for the public to watch the rituals of the Prairie Chickens. It was built and designed by WoodLink LTD last winter.
Some 106 trees were planted in Mount Ayr in another successful Trees Forever/Branching out program. Some 78 volunteers had part in the tree planting this year. Fifteen trees planted at the school and 43 trees added to those at Judge Lewis Park. Another 48 were planted at residences and other areas of the community.
Citizens Bank of Mount Ayr will soon own the Commercial Federal Bank office located in Kellerton. The two banking companies have announced that they have signed a purchase and assumption agreement for sale of the facility. Kim Greenland, president of the Mount Ayr office, will oversee operations of the Kellerton branch.
The Ringgold County Girl Scouts program received the president’s award at the Moingona Council’s annual meeting in Des Moines recently. The award began twelve years ago and is the highest award a geographical area can receive. Jodi Angus serves as volunteer manager for the Girl Scouts in Ringgold County and helped the area meet the goals for the award.

Ten Years Ago

The new steeple at the United Church of Diagonal is now set in place, thanks to the skills and talents of several local residents. The steeple stands approximately 32 feet tall, including the cross.
Mount Ayr senior Riley Weehler was recently presented the schools highest agricultural honor, the DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award sponsored by Monsanto.
Birth: April 8, a son, Gus, to Dr. Amy Hynek McFarland and Dr. Stacy McFarland.
