One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, May 6, 1925.)
Here is a new law that product of the 41st general assembly, effective April 1, 1926: Pasteurization of skimmed milk, ice cream, or buttermilk. Every owner, manager or operator of a creamery or ice cream factory shall before delivering to any person any skimmed milk, ice cream, or buttermilk, cause the cream for milk from which same is derived to be pasteurized.
The breaking of several world records at the Drake Relays serves to magnify some of the qualities that characterize the track.
Because of some peculiar quality of Iowa soil, or of some happy accident in locating the stadium, or of some stroke of genius in constructing the track, there is here in Iowa one of the fastest tracks in the world. So important is this that the track will be tightly planked before putting up the new stadium.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Three FFA members received the highest degree in the state, that of Iowa Farmer. They were Hugh Terwilliger, Glenn Sickels, and Gene Zinn.
Neighbors of Clifford Gaule went Wednesday of last week to his farm in Grant township and did his spring plowing. Mr. Gaule has been ill and the courtesy was extended as a “good neighbor” act. Men who did the plowing were Tom Canny, Burl Mobley, Carl Abarr, Jim Fabricous, Raymond Swank, Bill Osmond, Melvin Akers, John Sickels, Roger Payne, Paul Vanderpluym, Everett Pine, Denzil Mobley, Glen Gardner, Jim Sickels, Dan Burch and Rex Bolinger.
Baldner and Roe Clothiers grand opening will be May 6.
Marriage: April 30, Karen Thompson and Dean Breckenridge…Aprl 22, Annabelle Brown and Vern Brown.
Births: April 15, a son, Stephen, to Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Berger…April 4, a son, Kevin, to Dr. and Mrs. James Maharry…April 25, a daughter, Joyce, to Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Baker…Friday, a son to Mr. and Mrs. William Green.

David Roed son of Mr. and Mrs. Chet Roed of Mount Ayr was named the winner of the coveted Arion Award at the annual spring band concert here Thursday night.
Jerold Yearous, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Yearous of Mount Ayr won second place in the Blue Grass district Pinewood Derby in Creston Sunday.
The town of Kellerton has been approved by the Farmers Home Administration for a loan of $249,000 and grant of about $110,000 from another government agency to complete the $550,000 sanitary sewer project. Terms on the loan are 40 years.
Births: May 4, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Ron Gater…May 3, a daughter, Kendra, to Mr. and Mrs. Larry Crawford.

Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Howie of 315 S. Cleveland Street in Mount Ayr have been awarded the yard of the week.
A new soil conservationist, Laura Frana, has joined the staff at the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Ringgold county.
Angie Shields, a Mount Ayr Community senior was named the second place winner in the Nancy McCay Harsh chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution good citizen essay contest this year. She is the daughter of Raymond and Donna Shields of Mount Ayr.
Matthew Gilliland, a 2000 graduate of Mount Ayr Community high school and member of the Mount Ayr FFA chapter, has been awarded $1,000 college scholarship by Dodge Division and Glendenning Motor Company. Gilliland is the son of Mike and Debbie Gilliland.
Brad Elliott a MACHS senior has signed a national letter of intent to participate in the cross country and track program at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, MO next year.
A Mount Ayr Community elementary school fifth grader who shot her first deer in the fall, shot her first turkey hunting in Ringgold county this spring. Kati Kemery 11 years bagged the 22# turkey while hunting with her father.

The city of Mount Ayrwas placed under a boil order as result of a water line break late Monday.
Valedictorian of the Mount Ayr class of 2015 is Shelbie Greene, daughter of David and Jodi Greene. Salutatorian is Lanessa Brand, daughter of Ron and Rhonda Brand.
Diagonal’s valedictorian is Kaitlyn Klommhaus, daughter of Kevin and Shelly Klommhaus of Mount Ayr and salutatiorian is Mariah Kilgore, daughter of Larry and Melody Kilgore of Diagonal.
Mount Ayr Community school board received four resignations and hired three new employees Monday May 11. Resignations were received from FFA advisor Susie Catanzerti, para-educator Heather Martin, assistant varsity girls basketball coach Ranae Klinkefus and assistant varsity volleyball coach John Larsen.
