July 4th fun, fireworks planned in area

Independence Day is quickly approaching, and several observances are planned around the area.
Clearfield
The Clearfield Lions Club 72nd annual celebration will include three days of fun beginning Wednesday, July 2 and culminating on Friday, July 4.
This year’s theme is “Freedom Rolls On.”
Clearfield’s annual festivities will begin with a 5K Glow Run at 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2. Starting at the Clearfield Lions Hall, runners may choose between a 5K (3.1 mile) run/walk and a two mile run/walk. The event will be divided across seven different age classes for both male and female participants.

A home run derby is planned for Thursday, July 3 at the ball field. Competition begins at 5 p.m. for adults followed by high school/college players at 5:30 p.m. and kids 15 and under at 6:00 p.m. Contact Chris Leonard at 402-650-1557 for more information.
The always popular truck and tractor pull gets underway Thursday at 7:00 p.m. with competition in six classes. The event is sanctioned by the Northwest Missouri Tractor Pullers Association and the Midwest Puller’s Association. Admission is $15 with children 12 and under admitted free. On Friday, the annual 4th of July celebration starts with sandlot volleyball in the park at 9:00 a.m. Contact Daniel Leonard at 641-344-9885 for more information.
The fun continues in the Clearfield Park with a baby contest at 1:00 p.m., followed by kids games at 2:00 p.m. Kids and adults ages 4 and up are invited to participate in such games as foot/sack races and an egg toss.
A bags tournament will begin at 4:00 p.m. at Bootleggers Bar & Grill. Sign up begins at 3 p.m. Contact Shain Sites to register your team at 642-202-0828.
The Clearfield United Methodist Church will be serving pie and ice cream for $6 inside the Clearfield Lions Hall from 5-8:30 p.m.
Registration for the gigantic parade gets underway at 5 p.m. at the old Clearview Nursing Home at the corner of North and Jefferson streets.
Antique tractors carrying flags representing all 50 states should start assembling to pick up their flags at 5:30 p.m. Tractors should then line up west of the nursing home.
The parade itself begins at 6:30 p.m.
Following the parade, kids can enjoy a variety of fun including pedal pull, inflatables, barrel train, mini shuttle rides, saucers, dart board, and coin toss All kids rides are 25 cents. Bingo is also available.
Live music on the slab will be provided by the Second Time Around band.
The 72nd annual Clearfield Lions Club celebration will conclude with a fireworks show at approximately 10:00 p.m. Cash drawings will be held after the fireworks.
Fireworks
Besides the fireworks in Clearfield, the Sportsmen’s Club in Mount Ayr launch it fireworks display from the Loch Ayr Lake dam on Saturday, July 5 at dusk (around 9:30 p.m.).
At Sun Valley Lake, the privately-run display from Fireworks Cove will be held July 4 with the Sun Valley Iowa Lake Association’s display coming July 5.
