One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, June 26, 1925.)
Two of the happiest boys in Mount Ayr are John Freeland and John Williams, who received by express last week three prairie dogs from Imperial, NE. The dogs were sent by John Freeland’s aunt Miss Hattie Kimberling.
As a matter of record that comparison may be made in the future it should be recorded that the greatest drop in temperature during the month of May in Iowa was at Webster City, where the mercury fell from a maxium of 102 degrees on May 26, a difference of 78 degrees within sixty hours, according to the May general weather summary issued by the weather bureau at that place.
Delphos~who is kind enough to pass a little town in he quiet hours of the night quietly is a gentleman, but those who pass through our little city a couple of Saturday nights lately are very rude and ungentlemanly the way they disturb people from their rest. Please regard old people and do no disturb them anymore. We ask this kindly.

The town council of Mount Ayr in called session Saturday, authorized the purchase of a new Ford ton truck with dual wheels and hydraulic dump. The purchase was made from the Timby Motor Co. which submitted the low bid of $1,850. Other bidders were Carr Chevrolet, Myron Horn Co., Williams Auto, and Roe Implement,
On account of the railroad strike LeRoy Hill arrived home from Holcombe, IL. for a visit with his wife and son David. (AI: June 25, 1950 a railroad strike began in the United States 4,000 members of the Switchmen’s Union of North America walked off the job. The strike lasted until May 1952)

Fifty Years Ago

Two escapees from a girls home in Albert Lea, MN were charged by Sheriff Elbert Strange with larceny of a motor vehicle Friday. The charge was made following the theft of a 1975 Sprint owned by Earl Schardein of Mount Ayr. Schardein had left his pickup parked just north of French and Schardein Agency about 5:10 p.m. Friday and had stopped to pickup his wife Helen. When they returned to get in the pickup it was gone. It was recovered about 11 p.m. in Maryville, MO and wasn’t damaged.
Ken Keller, 16 yr old son of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Keller of Diagonal died about 5 p.m. Saturday at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines of injuries received Thursday afternoon from a motorcycle and pickup truck accident. A passenger on Keller’s motorcycle was his cousin, Eric Walter, 14 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Walter of Mount Ayr who remains a patient at Iowa Methodist Hospital.
Attorney Mike Warin recently purchased the brick building at the northeast corner of the intersection of South Taylor Street and Monroe Street. Seller was Susan Timby Young of Carlise IL. The building was built in 1880’s and housed the Geo. Slentz Mercantile business for many years. In later years it has been occupied by the Q-Club pool room, operated by Carroll (Lefty) Geist, who suspended operations and held a closing out sale Sunday.
Recipents of the beef roast given to the family having the first baby born at Ringgold Co. Hospital closest to Father’s Day, June 15, presented by Ringgold Co. CowBells was Mr. and Mrs. Dean Pettit of Parnell, MO.

Cattle producers in Ringgold county and five other counties in southern Iowa will be eligible for emergency water assistance under the US Department of Ag Emergency Conservation program. The effects of drought on southern Iowa have left many cattle producers struggling with options for watering livestock.
Dark clouds rolled in and brought much needed rain to Ringgold county Sunday evening, while the area missed out on some of the strong winds that did damage in neighboring counties. The two good rains received Friday and Sunday totaled 3 1/3” of rain fall.
When country western star Jerry Reed comes to Lakeside Casino in Osceola for a concert July 14, a band member with local ties will be part of the group. Mark Thornton, brother of two former owners of a grocery store in Mount Ayr is part of the Jerry Reed band.
History was made in Ringgold county Thursday when the gas price of gasoline went above $2 a gallon for the first time. While Lynn Rinehart hiked the price to the level for premium for a time late last week, he tried to take a little sting out of the price. He offered a complimentay cap and soda drink to anyone purchasing at least one gallon at the record high price.

Ten Years Ago

U.S. Senator Joni Ernst toured Ringgold Co. Hospital Saturday afternoon during a stop in Mount Ayr. Ernst, a Repubilcan beginning her first term as an Iowa senator, used the occasion to voice her disappointment with the recent Supreme Court ruling in favor of the Affordable Care Act.
The Ringgold County Board of Supervisiors met in regular session Monday June 29 and approved the contract with Rod Shields to assume duties as the county road superintendent.
Education specialist Mallory Machir and animal presenter, Adriana Negron from the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines visited in Mount Ayr Public Library recently as part of the library’s summer reading and activity program. Mary Kathryn Gepner estimated over 100 kids attended the presentation.
