One Hundred
Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, July 1, 1925.)
The smooth bunch of highwaymen who made a daylight robbery of the Cottage Grove Bank in Des Moines, all of whom are now in jail, “pulled the wool” over the eyes of Paul Brown, sheriff of Gentry County, MO. Arthur Stanley, constable of Bethany, telephoned Sheriff Brown that the bandits were traveling on the Jefferson highway at a terrible speed. Brown with several armed men went to a bridge west of Albany and parked his car across, closing the road. The Marmon (A model of automobile produced in Indianapolis, often called “the nearest American approximation to the Rolls-Royce,” the Marmon was produced by Marmon Motor Car Company, a division of Nordyke and Marmon Company on West Morris Street. It was part of an elite group of cars that did not start from a horse-drawn carriage plant but rather from established machinery builders.) passed but when the sheriff held up his hand the big car stopped and was backed up to where the officer stood in the road. His men were yet concealed. Wagner, the leader of the gang, and his companions ask Brown if he was having car trouble, and if they could do anything to assist him. Brown informed them that he was looking for reported bank robbers and they readly agreed to let him search their car. He looked inside and saw nothing suspicious. During this Brown’s sides came out of hiding and the entire group decided the men in the Marmon were what they said they were, St. Louis traveling men on a motor trip. Therefore they let them go ahead. They met a different reception as they approached St. Joseph.
