One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News,Thursday, July 22, 1925.)
Chas. V. Agee’s Ford coupe was stolen Sunday evening while Mr. and Mrs. Agee were visiting at the Yates home in Pattonsburg, MO.
Mr. and Mrs. Agee motored to Pattonsburg Sunday morning, the car was parked in the street and it was while the families were out driving in the Yate’s car about 9 o’clock in the evening that the coupes was driven away. Officials were notified, but no trace of the car had been found today.
Jim Williams moved his cafe last week from the building on Depot Street, recently purchased by O.G. Spencer to the Timby building on the southeast corner of the square. Mr. and Mrs. Williams have built up a spledid patronage and the new location affords better opportunity to serve the public.
One of the states new laws which became effective this month provides that an automobile driver after passing a car going in the same direction must be at least 30 feet ahead of the other car before taking up a position directly in front of it.
The law is intended to correct one of the major evils of careless driving. Many fatal accidents have been caused by drivers who persist in “cutting in” only a few inches from the car that has just been passed.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Six golfers from Mount Ayr were among the winners in the Grant City golf tournament July 23. In all fifteen golfers from Mount Ayr competed.
Joe Place was the winner in the second flight, while Charles Lawhead won the 4th flight consolation. Bill Rusk was the ninth flight winner; Lewis Horne was the winner and Charles Butrick the runnerup in the tenth flight. Ed Carr was the consolation winner in his flight.
Others competing included Royce Davis, Joe McNeill, Dr. B.W. Knight, Lynman Larsen, Milt Henderson, George Jackson, Laurance Bishop, Leland Dufty and Bob Askern. Jap Dalbey, of Grant City, was the winner and was also medalist with 90 for 27 holes. Par on the Grant City course is 31.
Mrs. Merle Butler and Jimmie, of Benton, and Mrs. Don Stull and Patti Jane, spent Wednesday of last week with Mrs. David Irving and Pat.
John Denhart who has been employed for several years at the Shafer Service Station in Mount Ayr will become proprietor and assume management of the station effective the 1st of August.
The Stone brothers, Howard and Walter will continue their duties as station attendants. Both have been long time loyal employees.
Day Shafer retires from the station which he has opperated continously for twenty-three years, during which period he has manintained a high standard service.

Fifty Years Ago

Dr. John Peters, Mount Ayr veterinarian, has been elected commander of Mount Ayr American Legion Post 172 at a meeting held July 14.
Scuba divers from Mount Ayr, Barton French, Bill Stull, and Mike Swanson were called to Viking Lake near Villisca around 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon to aid in the recovery of the body of a youth who drowned while swimming in the lake. The body was found around 10:30 p.m.
The granddaughter of a Mount Ayr couple is featureed on the cover of Embroidery Professional magazine headquartered in Des Moines which is distributed nationally to fabric and sewing stores. Bailee West, daughter of Mike and Carmen West of Des Moines and granddaughter of Dick and Theanna Simpson of Mount Ayr.
Marvin Woollums of Mount Ayr took first place in a horseshoe pitching tournament hosted at the courts in Judge Lewis Pak in Mount Ayr.
Rosann Wurster, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Wurster of Tingley and a 1975 graduate of Graceland College, Lamoni, will leave in August to participate as a J-3 missionary and teacher in Japan.
Marla Wilkins wins senior 4-H dress revue. Marla Wilkins of Tingley modeled the three-piece polyster knit ensemble she had constructed and was selected as the Ringgold County representative in the Iowa State Fair dress revue competition.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

MACH will have one student, Joshua Smith, participating in the Southeast Iowa Honor Marching Band which will march at the Fiesta Bowl parade in Arizona on New Year’s Day.
Johsua who plays trombone, will be taking part in a three day marching camp in Red Oak August 2-4th.
Will Ringgold County be attracting visitors to a Gooseberry Lake Recreational Area northeast of Mount Ayr at some point in the future.
Ringgold County Fair winners: Kurtis Fooken, champion market pen of rabbits; Amy Weeda supreme champion buck rabbit; Brian Fooken grand champion of other poultry class; Matthew Weeda grand champion feeder lamb.
Birth: July 22, son Weston, to Mark and Andrea England.

Ten Years Ago

Wilson’s ‘come home’ as new physicians.
Husband and wife, Brad and Nicole Wilson to open practice August 5. Tonight, July 30, from 5-7 p.m. residents of Ringgold county will have the opportunity to meet the newest additions to the staff of Mount Ayr Medical Clinic.
Ringgold county sheriff officals have received reports of a number of thefts in recent weeks. On July 12 Jason Parker of rural Clearfield reported that someone had broken into his machine shed and stole several items.
On July 13 Ringgold and Taylor county sheriff officials conducted a search warrant at the residence of Harold Brown in Clearfield where all of the stolen items were recovered.
Two players with local ties played in the annual Shrine Bowl all-star football game Saturday July 25. Joe Ricker son of Brent and Martha Ricker of Mount Ayr and Trenton Wells son of Junior and Angie (Still) Wells of Leon and grandson of Dick and Bonnie Still of Mount Ayr played on the winning south squad.
