One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, August 19, 1925.)
Brief mention was made last week of the receipt of a telegram Wednesday conveying the information that 60 head of steers shipped by W.P. Turner and sons of Lotts Creek township, were sold that day at $16.10 per cwt. This is reported the highest price paid for beef on the hoof since 1920.
When deputy sheriff S.V. Hale went to the jail yesterday evening to take the evening meal to Ernest Sheil and Ralph Hopkins, who are being held on charges of bootlegging, he received a surprise attack, was overpowered and the prisoners made their escape. The deputy sheriff was unarmed and the men made their attack, one from either side of the door as he entered the jail. Deputy Hale notified Sheriff Stephens and the officers went in prusuit of the prisoners, whom they found hiding in a corn field south of the city and in less than a half hour after the escape the prisoners were returned to jail.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Ronald Lynch, of Maloy, exhibiting Aberdeen-Angus, had the grand champion and reserve grand champion baby beef and Rex Galloway of Redding with his Chester White, showed the grand champion fat barrow and Jim Faris, of Mount Ayr, with Durocs had the reserve champion in the junior livestock show at the Ringgold County Fair held last week.
Double funeral services for Maynard Swanson 54, and son, Carl Maynard, were held Sunday afternoon, August 20th. Carl Swanson, 19 years of age, died Wednesday afternoon of last week of injuries sustained when the pickup, in which he and his father were riding was struck by a Chicago Great Western locomotive at a road crossing, 3 miles north of Mitchellville.
Donna Harvey, of the Maloy Colleens, was selected as the winner in the senior division of the county 4-H style reveue. A close second was Evelyn Pine, of the Jolly Jinglers.
The teaching staff for Maloy consolidated schools for 1950 is as follows, superintendent and coach, Maurice Carr; Miss Carmalita O’Connor, high school; Miss Lucile Albee 6th, 7th, and 8th grades; Mrs. Carson, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades; Miss Shay primary, 1st, and 2nd; janitor and bus driver Earl Lynch, south route driver, Lee Motsinger.

Fifty Years Ago

A new Mount Ayr business opened it’s doors Friday August 8. Casey’s General Store, the 39th store of an Iowa chain, is now open for business at the corner of South and Pierce streets, on the site formerly occupied by Ruth’s Steak House. The building there has been razed and the new structure built to house the business. Managed by Carey Crowson a 1972 graduate of Mount Ayr High School.
The last remaining vacancy on the Mount Ayr school faculty was filled at the regular meeting of the board of directors Monday. K.Randy Trotter was hired to teach junior and senior high social studies at a salary of $8,000.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Leading the list brought home from the Iowa State Fair was Clay Pettit’s grand champion poultry, he showed the grand champion market broilers at the fair, a pen which sold for $4,000 at the 4-H sale Sunday by a representative of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
A trio of Mount Ayr men have been charged in Worth County. MO, for stealing anhydros ammonia from MFA Ag Service in Sheridan, MO. Charged witht he ammonia theft are Scott Thurman 23, Greg Morton, 38, and Justin Lee Beier, 20, of Mount Ayr.
A retirement receptioin for Marlene “Kay” Terwilliger from the Iowa Department of Human Services office in Ringgold county will be held August 29. Terwilliger will retire after serving 35 years with the department.
Marv Woollums of Mount Ayr, defending champion of the Iowa State Fair horseshoe pitching contest, held on to clinch the title again this year.
Birth: August 15, a daughter, Caitlyn, to Robert McLead and Carrie Smith.

Ten Years Ago

Two Mount Ayr residents were recently honored guests at a Spirit of 45 ceremony honoring veterans of WWII. Jake Dailey and Amon Hunt were among over 300 in attendance at the ceremony held August 16 at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery near Van Meter.
The Decatur Co. Attorney, Lisa Jeanes and Sheriff, Bert Muir, have announced that $2,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons respondsible for the death of Ryan Fulkerson. Fulkerson was found May 11, 2014 in a ditch in rural Decatur County. Death from an apparent gunshot wound.
