Raiderettes continue their winning ways

MOUNT AYR, Iowa — Mount Ayr won a pair of games on back-to-back nights late last week to remain perfect on the young season.
The Raiderettes nearly doubled up visiting Southeast Warren 81-47 last Friday in Mount Ayr to improve to 6-0 on the season.
The Raiderettes came out explosive in the first quarter putting up a big 26 points to the Warhawks six. Mount Ayr kept up the offensive pressure in the second quarter but Southeast Warren picked up its offensive pace, The Raiderettes, however, still went into halftime with a big lead at the break 47-29.
Mount Ayr would continue scoring at a high rate, while holding the Warhawks down as they cruised to victory.
“Well, we wanted to try a little bit faster pace and play a little bit more full court,” Mount Ayr coach Tad Streit said. “We were successful in the first quarter. In the second quarter, they kind of broke us down a little bit, and that’s something we’ve never practiced. We just said, let’s just go.”
Izzy Gilbertson continues the strong start to her junior season as she put up a game high 28 points to go with eight rebounds three blocks and three steals.
Jaylee Shaffer scored 18 points on the power of six three pointers. The junior also pulled down six rebounds. Dannie Stewart also reached double figures in scoring with 13 points and five assists. MaKel Jones also had five assists, as did Shaffer.
Last Thursday, the Raiderettes went on the road to Bedford on won by 20 points over the Bulldogs 47-27.
The game started out low scoring for both teams as Mount Ayr led 8-4 after the first quarter. Baskets continued to be hard to come by for both teams as the Raiderettes led only 15-10 at halftime.
Coming out of the break Mount Ayr founds its offensive groove and poured in 19 points, while continuing to clamp down of defense outscoring Bedford 19-5. Both teams would reach double figures in scoring in the final quarter but Mount Ayr’s lead was not in jeopardy.
Izzy Gilbertson led all scorers with 24 points and had another double-double with 13 rebounds. She was one steal short of completing the rare feat of a triple double as she also had nine steals to go along with five blocks.
Jaylee Shaffer reached double figures in scoring with 10. MaKel Jones had nine rebounds and three steals, while Keely Wasteney pulled down seven rebounds and Emma Reynolds had five points.
Earlier in the week, the Raiderettes hosted Southwest Valley on December 9 and won 47-37 in a game that was close throughout.
Mount Ayr would trail at halftime 18-11, but came out of the break doubling up the Timberwolves 20-10 to take the lead at 31-28 heading into the final quarter. The Raiderettes would close out the game strong for the 10-point victory.
Gilbertson led all scorers with 17 points and she also had nine rebounds and three blocks. Stewart had 14 points as she hit five shots from behind the arc as well as having four assists. Shaffer had nine points to go along with seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Jones had six rebounds and four steals.
The Raiderettes traveled to Wayne on Tuesday night and East Union on Wednesday (results were not available as of press time). Mount Ayr will host Missouri’s Worth County on Friday in the last game before the holiday break.
