One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, January 13, 1926.)
Neighbors of Guy Spicer to the number of 25 gathered at his home in Rice township and finished husking and cribbing his corn. Mr. Spicer got behind with his work on account of illness of his mother and the injuries sustained by his son George two weeks ago when he was struck by an automobile.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Morrison and children left Wednesday for their new home in Des Moines. Mr. Morrison has purchased a milk route in that place.
Tingley News~Day Carter’s hardware store was burglarized Monday night of last week, entrance was gained by breaking the glass in the front door and turning the lock. A Day-Fan radio, some pocket knives, some flashlights and batteries were stolen and the front door left open. Mr. Carter offers a reward for the thieves, but so far there is no clue to the robbers.
At the annual meeting of the Mount Ayr State Bank, held last week, officers and directors of the ensuing year were elected as follows: F.E. Sheldon, president; C.A. Campbell, vice president; W.T. Timby, cashier; Zella Swartz and Bernice Moore, assistant cashiers; directors: F.E. Sheldon, R.H. Spence, Clyde Lesan, H.A. Laird, C.A. Campbell, J.L. Kinsell and W.T. Timby.
Marriage: January 12, Lola Davis and R.Carter Holden.. January 14, Eldon Price and Betty Partello.
Birth: Tuesday, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Berry.

Seventy-Five Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, January 11, 1951.)
Andersons are hosts to 54 girls and boys. Of interest to the people of Mount Ayr and Ringgold County will be an item concerning Paul and Elton Anderson, which was taken from the Record Hearald, of Washington Court House, OH, under date of December 21.
The Anderson brothers, sons of Mrs. S.G. Spicer, of Rice township, and former residents of the county, are owners of a drive-in restaurant in Washington Court House. On the evening of December 20 they exemplified the true Christmas spirit by entertaining youngsters from the Children’s Home to a roast chicken dinner and holiday treats.
Mrs. Minnie Spicer, Rex Anderson and Pauline Bell and sons enjoyed television Sunday evening in the Vern Long home.
Mr. and Mrs. George L. Saville and Sally and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Knapp and Cheryl spent Sunday with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leland Saville.
An increase of 25 deaths over the preceding year were recorded during 1950 in the columns of the Record News. This was an average of 23 for each of the twelve months of the year. The total number of 275 deaths included 165 males and 110 females.

Fifty Years Ago

Members of the Mount Ayr Volunteer Fire Department answered 42 calls during 1975, and increase of three over the year before. The department was called to 16 town fires, 15 rural fires and three mutual aid fires and 8 rescue calls.
Five Mount Ayr Community high school instrumentalists have been selected to play in the Southwest Iowa Band Master’s Association’s honor band. Students chosen to participate with 143 musicians from forty-eight different schools in southwest Iowa at Red Oak the 19th include: Diana Davison, flute; Becky Morrison, alto clarinet; Joni Brown, clarinet; David Perry, French horn; and Scott French, drums.
Marriage: December 19, Kathy Richards and Steve Cole.. November 29, Diane Jeter and Daniel Sothman.. December 27, Vickie Pike and Jim Monaghan.
Birth: December 30, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Steven Livingston.

Ringgold County officials will receive six percent increase in pay for 2001-2002 fiscal year as decided by the supervisors.
The Diagonal community school district and how it has adapted to survive as the second smallest school district in the state will be featured in a segment of Iowa Public Television’s Living in Iowa program this week.
A Mount Ayr Raiderette ranks among the top in the state in several statistics in the listing through December 31 compiled by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
Jolene Frost ranked 19th in the state in blocked shots with 2.17 a game. She ranks 61st in the state in assists with 3.67. She is 101 in the state in rebounds with 7.83 per game. She ranks 174th in the state in scoring with 11.67 points per game and 86th in the state shooting percentage with a .521.
Randi Reynolds was on the list of shooting percentage for players averaging less than four field goals per game. She ranked sixth in this group with a .629 shooting percentage.

Ten Years Ago

The wall dedicated to the Mount Ayr Community Hall of Fame is ready for public display. The wall, located in the hall between the superintendent’s office and the principal’s office, holds plaques commemorating inductees into the hall of fame. Brad Elliott of Podium Ink designed and installed the wall wrap.
