One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, February 24, 1926.)
The Mount Ayr high school baskeball team were unable to cope with the speed and basket shooting of the Delphos team in the game here Friday night and were trailing 22-11 at the end.
The game started fast and both teams playing flashy basketball. Varner put his team in the lead with a field goal, but Downie shot into the open and evened the score with a basket before the first quarter ended. The visiting players displayed more speed and a close defense during the second period and had obained an 8-2 lead by the half-time.
The Mount Ayr players displayed a passing attack soon after the second half opened that proved successful, but they were unable to make any headway in cutting down the lead of the visitors.
In the last period the Delphos players worked the ball through the local guards to Varner who sank four spectacular baskets and put the game safely in their favor. It is hard to pick individual stars of the Delphos team in this game, but the goal shooting of Varner, the floor game of O. Polley and the guarding of Sefrit and Geiger deserve mention. The local guards, Buck and Davis, were again the leading players for Mount Ayr.
