One Hundred Years Ago

Breezy Briefs from Tingley: D.B. Weeda finished filling his ice house Friday, storing 70 tons of ice. Wayne Overholtzer finished Tuesday with 60 tons in the McCowen ice house. There is in the neighborhood 500 tons of splendid ice stored in town and perhaps more. This should keep us cool next summer.
As we said some time ago, let’s not spend too much money on our roads. The airplane will largely solve the good roads question in the near future. We predict that many of the Record News readers will seem them as common as the automobile now, and autos will be as scarce as buggies are now. Please watch my smoke.
Thirty-five years ago today, January 20, M.E. Freeland, proprietor of the R.C.U Fidelity Store, begain his business career in Mount Ayr and has been continuously engaged in business in this city since.
Marriage: January 1, Frank Ullery and Ruth Beale.. January 6, Eldon Price and Betty Partello.
Births: January 15, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rogers.

The Price Food Market in Mount Ayr, owned and operated by C. Eldon Price for the past two years, has been sold to Harry Bisbey, of Mount and his brother, E.F. Bisbey, of Clarion. Possession was given Monday.
Pvt. Jack Marshall has been reported “missing in action in Korea since December 2, according to a telegram received Friday by Sheriff Homer P. Todd from the War Department.
Jack, the son of Mrs. Gernie Marshall of Caledonia vicinity, has been with the U.S. Army for the past year, and for several months has been seeing action in Korea.

Fifty Years Ago

First arrival at the Ringgold County Hospital in the new year of 1976 is Michael Ray King, son of Ross and Gerry King of Mount Ayr.
A “Santa Claus” type visit was made after Christmas to the Don Kinne home at Tingley sometime during the night of January 12-13. The visitor was a raccoon. The unwelcome guest came down an unused chimney and explored the whole house before falling asleep in the corner of the bathroom where he was found by Kinne when he got up to go to work Tuesday.
Leroy Blessman was re-elected president of the Ringgold County Development Corporation at the annual meeting of stockholders held January 12.
Fifteen Mount Ayr Community high school vocalists have been selected to attend the Creston Little All-State vocal festival to be held Wednesday and Thursday January 21 and 22.
Local students include: Tyler Knapp, Mike Sickels, Chuck Bennett, Brian Noble, Melonie Triggs, Wendy Nieman, Donna Dukes, Melanie Johnson, Misty Pollock, Kristy Glick, Sherri Klejch, Mary Beth Fell, Patty Shelden, Doris Crawford and Kerry Burright.

Two days of filming was edited to seven minutes of story time for an Iowa Public Television piece about the Diagonal school district and how it is coping as one of the smallest school districts in the state.
A dozen Mount Ayr community students will be taking part in the Elks Hoop Shoot held at Southwestern Community College gymnasium in Creston Saturday January 20. Participants are as follows: eight and nine year old boys and girls: David Showalter, Malcom Mercer, Holly England and Sarah Dredge; ten and eleven year old boys and girls: Brennon Shields, Joe Catanzareti, Chelsey Hosfield and Kati Kemery: twelve and thirteen year old boys and girls: Cameron Weidenthaler, Brad England, Sarah Geist and Nicole Minnick.
Marriage: September 2, Josie Stephens and Wyatt Mobley.. September 4, Anglea Newton and Andrew Serpe.
Birth: January 14, twin boys to Mr. and Mrs. Larry Knight, Jr.

Ten Years Ago

Ringgold County Public Health has confirmed two cases of pertussis or whooping cough within the county.
A water main break on Adams Street kept city crews busy Monday and caused the Mount Ayr Community elementary school water pressure issues. It also caused a water boil order for the school.
On Saturday January 9, Ruth Angus enjoyed seeing relatives at a lunch prior to the open house celebration or her 100th birthday.
