MOUNT AYR, Iowa — The Mount Ayr girls basketball team saw its season come to end last Tuesday with a 58-50 district tournament loss at home to the Pleasantville Trojans.
The Raiderettes (20-2)came out strong in the first quarter scoring 18 points to the Trojans 12.
Pleasantville would battle back in the second quarter to take a 29-27 halftime lead.
Mount Ayr would keep it close coming out of the break, but the Trojans grew their lead by a point heading into the final quarter.
Pleasantville closed the game on a 14-9 run in the fourth quarter to advance.
Raiderette coach Thad Streit made no excuses for the loss, but the team recovering from ilnesses certainly didn’t help.
“We were just doing some uncharacteristic things,” he said. “Our backbone of the season was our defense and we didn’t play as good a defense as we should have, or could have and we didn’t rebound.
“We got hammered. They had 23 offensive rebounds that just killed (us). You can’t defend the game that way when you’re giving up offensive rebounds. So we’re pretty uncharacteristic, and looking back at it, I think we were recovering from sickness and we just weren’t sharp. But you got to be in the postseason. You’re not guaranteed to move on again, play your game, whether you’re sick or injured or what it’s part of it.”
Izzy Gilbertson led the team by recording a double-double with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Fellow junior Jaylee Shaffer scored 11 points and had two rebounds. Sophomore Emma Reynolds scored five points while also getting four rebounds.
