MOUNT AYR, Iowa — The Raiderettes defended their home court against the East Union Eagles in what was their game for conference champion last Friday.
Mount Ayr enjoyed a 72-26 blowout victory against the Eagles ending the conference season with a 15-1 record. This gave the Raiderettes the conference championship. Unfortunately the Raiderettes have to share their title of conference champs with Nodaway Valley after they won their last game against Central Decatur Cardinals.
The Raiderettes will move on to districts on February 17 at home.
Juniors Izzy Gilbertson and Dannie Stewart felt a little melancholy about the tying win.
“We wanted to be conference champions from the start, and that was one of our biggest goals this year, but kind of sucks tying with Nodaway,” Gilbertson said. “I mean, nobody likes to tie for first.”
Stewart echoed her teammate.
“Honestly I think that if I were to tie with anyone, it’d probably be Nodaway Valley instead of some other team in the conference,” she said.
Both Gilbertson and Stewart look forward to next year in the hopes of being POI champs again and making it to state if they do not do it this year.
Gilbertson showed out for her final conference game leading the Raiderettes with 22 points. She also led Mount Ayr in blocks and assists going for nine in each stat, while also securing four rebounds in the game.
Sophomore Emma Reynolds followed behind Gilbertson with 16 points, while also having six steals. Stewart scored 10 points in the match up. Senior Kensie Barnes led the Raiderettes with six rebounds and also scored three three points. Junior Jaylee Shaffer scored nine points in the game as well.
