Obituary – Larry Joe Sackett
Larry Joe Sackett, son of Lyle & Ramona (Smith) Sackett, was born August 6, 1941, at Mount Ayr, Iowa.
Larry grew up at Mount Ayr and graduated from Mount Ayr High School.
Larry entered service for his country on July 4, 1959, in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was honorably discharged with the rank of E-4 on July 3, 1963. He was very proud to be a Marine.
Larry was united in marriage to Louise Ann Burchett on September 23, 1961, at the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr. To this union two children were born: Randy Joe and Laurie Suzanne.
Larry and Louise made their home in Des Moines where they lived for many years. Larry was a salesman and regional manager for Globe Machinery.
Larry coached little league baseball for 9 years as well as delivering the Des Moines Register. Larry liked sports, cheering for both the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones. He hunted Pheasants and Quail with his son. He not only enjoyed it but was very good at pool and snooker. His brother Jim received many candy bars while Larry played pool.
Larry was a member of the V.F.W. and was actively involved in the Shriners.
Larry and Louise spent their retirement years at Sun Valley Lake. Larry loved the “lake life” golfing when he was able. He liked to watch his westerns on TV and was loyal to Ford Motor Company.
Larry had a soft spot for pet dogs. He loved Oscar and was heartbroken when he died. Most recently, Larry’s dog was named Charlie. Larry will be remembered as a kind jokester and gentle man who was always willing to help.
Larry became a resident of the Mount Ayr Health Care Center where he quietly passed away on February 26, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Louise; both of his children, Randy and Laurie; sister Janet Kane.
Survivors include his significant other, Connie Eason of Sun Valley Lake; daughter-in-law Jill Sackett of Winterset, IA; brother Jim (Linda) Sackett of Mukwonago, Wisconsin; sister Joyce Jackson of Rising Sun, Indiana; sister-in-law Viva Dean Buell of Des Moines; brothers-in-law Bill “Butch” (wife Renee) Burchett of Ankeny and Duane (wife Margie) Burchett of Lamoni; other relatives and friends.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr. Casketbearers were Mike Neessen, Mike Crecelius, David Kane, James Doyle, Brian Findley, Pete Doyle. Honorary Pallbearers were Jim Sackett, Woody Woodrow, Wally Smith, and Gerry Young. Burial followed in the Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. Military honors were provided by the U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard. Memorials are to the Shriners Children’s Hospital.
