One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, April 14, 1926.)
Iowa contributed to the fighting strength of the civil war forty-eight regiments of infantry, nine regiments of cavalry and four batteries. Iowa’s enlisted men numbered 78,059; there were killed in battle 2,017, wounded 8,282, fatally wounded 1,199, died of disease 8,695, officers killed in battle 135, officers wounded 573, officers who died of wounds 88, officers who died of disease 115.
Mr. and Mrs. Leland Saville had a real surprise when a bunch of friends dropped in about 6:30 Wednesday evening. The guests unanimously report a jolly good time. Very appetizing refreshments were served. Leaving at a late hour they declared that Mr. and Mrs. Saville were ideal entertainers. Those present were Miss Eula McQuigg, Miss Crystal Miller, Miss Eva Herren and Cecil Fullerton, Keith Saville, Lloyd Saville, Howard Ullery, Mrs. O.L. Fullerton and Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Fullerton.
Maloy high school baseball boys play at Delphos Wednesday afternoon and at Lenox Friday. The probable lineup for the season will be: E. Warin, pitcher; J. Warin, catcher; O’Connor, second base; Lambert Hull, short stop; Floyd Link, third base; Clarence Cordell, left field; Gerald O’Connor, center field; William Tharp, right field.
Ringgold County Farm Bureau in co-operation with the DuPont DeNemours Powder Company and Messrs. Rich and Studer, of Redding, IA, are planning to demonstrate the use of dynamite in straightening the channel of the Grand River just west of Redding.

Birth: April 7, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Olney.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Under date pf April 14, L.N. Jackson tendered his resignation as superintendent of the Ellston schools, effective at the close of the school year.
Donald (Jake) Dailey, who has been re-called to service to the U.S. Navy, has taken leave of absence as recorder of Ringgold County.
Appropiate services for the presentation of the Bronze Star Medal with the letter “V” devise, recently awarded Pvt. Franklin H. Wilkey, will be held Sunday afternoon, April 22, at 3 o’clock at the Ellston Legion Hall.
Pvt. Wilkey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold A. (Jack) Wilkey, of Clark, S.D., and former resident of Ellston, was awarded the medal for heroic achievement in action during the period 31 August to 3 September, 1950, in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea.

Fifty Years Ago

Milt Henderson was honored as “Lion of the Year” by members of the Mount Ayr Lions Club at their regular meeting April 5.
On April 1, Randal (Randy) Vardaman was employed by the Creston Production Credit Association as assistant vice president, and will be manager of the Mount Ayr and Leon offices.
A Mount Ayr, IA man has graduated at Chanute AFB, IL, from the technical training course for U.S. Air Force.
Airman Brad L. Holden whose parents are Mr. and Mrs. Daryl L. Holden of Mount Ayr, was trained to maintain and service multi-engine jet aircraft. The airman now goes to Travis AFB, California for duty with a unit of the Military Airlift command.
Marriage: February 14, Mary Lee Terwilliger and Keith Hill.

Twenty-Five Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, April 19, 2001.)
Tornado does $1.5 million in damage. No injuries reported when level F-3 storm destroy homes, businesses and farms as it leaves trail all the way across Ringgold County.
The storm entered Ringgold County approximately 11:45 a.m. right along county road P38, some 10 miles southwest of Mount Ayr in Middle Fork township. The storm crossed P46 in Poe township south of the Warren Angus farm, crossed Highway 2 one mile east of Mount Ayr. It hit the Bob Bennett farm just east of the P54 abd J25 section in Liberty township, then tracked north east through Tingley township two miles east of Tingley and went into Union county near the border of Tingley and Union townships.
Two ribbon cuttings held. Hospice of Central Iowa held a cutting at their new location on the west side of the square. Also holding a ribbon cutting was Majestic Lanes on the east side of the square. Lonnie and Diane Huntsman are the new owners of the bowling lane.
Marriage: Nov. 4, 2000, Kayren Watson and Michael Davidson.

Ten Years Ago

The Mount Ayr Community school board approved the recommendations of district administrators to hire five new teachers. Daniel Showalter was hired as high school social studies teacher to replace Abby Elliott, who is assuming the newly created position of instructional coach in the Teacher Leadership Compensation program at the middle/high school.
Mariah Kruse was hired as a third grade teacher to replace Jill Weehler, who has assumed the TLC instructional coach position at the elementary building.
Contracts were also approved for two special education teachers, Melissa Weber and Alexa Anderson.
