What happens when Kelly and Terri Main, Rick Bender and Shirley and Wendell Wallace get together in a kitchen is beyond words. These five individuals with a passion for cooking and connecting with area youth organizations is one of the finest definitions of small-town community living.
The group hosts an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 6:30 to 10 a.m. the first Sunday of the month at the Mount Ayr American Legion. The Legion generously donates the use of the kitchen and hall for the event each month as their contribution towards the main goal — betterment of youth organizations in Ringgold County. Each month a youth organization is chosen to volunteer as helpers in the serving and preparation of the breakfast in exchange for a donation of the profits collected for the Sunday they serve at.
I sat with Sandy and Mike from Arispe while waiting for my breakfast. My dining companions like me were first time attendees. Sandy told me, “They found out about the event from friends, and neighbors.” They were pleased with the food for sure. Sandy, exclaimed, “That the cinnamon rolls were a nice surprise, especially the size.” They were HUGE from my observation!
The breakfast menu is extensive! A “Fast Track” self-service bar is available, or you can order right off the menu. The kids serve the food, bus, sanitize the tables and man the “Fast-Track” serving station. Lots of energy and smiles from this group of kids! In my opinion, “Eleven dollars well spent, I went back for seconds!”
This Sunday’s servers were the Diagonal Archery Team. Doug Ruby, one of the Archery coaches, was in attendance with nine volunteers from the Archery Team. Ruby proudly told me, “The team consists of 39 kids from fourth through 12th grade in the Diagonal School District, and that two team members from the elementary level placed in the State competition this year which then qualified the two youths for the Nationals.” Ruby further stated, “Carson Kuonen placed first, and Jaxon Doolittle placed 5th in State competition.”
Mark your calendars for the next scheduled event which will be July 5. Youth group participating to be announced soon! If you are involved with a youth group and would like your group to participate as servers, contact Rick at Napa, or Kelly at Splash’n Dash.
