Diagonal Lions annual celebration draws community over Labor Day weekend

DIAGONAL, Iowa — The annual Diagonal Lions Club Labor Day Celebration returned this past weekend bringing three days of tournaments, parades, contests, live entertainment and family activities to Diagonal over Labor Day weekend.
The annual celebration began on Saturday with a sand volleyball tournament at Middle Swede House and Fogle Lake.
An ATV poker run also took place Saturday. Live music by Garrett & The Relics provided entertainment throughout the day.
Sunday featured a full schedule of activities beginning with an outdoor church service at the church.
Motor enthusiasts had several opportunities to participate Sunday, including a car and motorcycle show. Other Sunday morning activities included a pickle pull at the park and 8-ball and 9-ball basketball, a golf outing was also held, with tee times beginning in the morning.
The afternoon featured a tractor distance pull followed by UTV driving and a Bean Bag Toss Tournament The day concluded with fireworks at Fogle Lake.
Monday served as the celebration’s grand finale, highlighted by the annual Mammoth Parade at 10 a.m. This year’s parade theme was “Party Like It’s 1776.” The parade brought residents, families and visitors together in downtown Diagonal to celebrate the community.
The final day continued with the Clint Kings Memorial Bike Race at 1and a garden tractor pull. The tractor pull included multiple classes and competitions, with a judge’s decision declared final.
A pickup and farm toy pull was also held followed by a fishing derby at Fogle Lake. A nickel scramble and a duck regatta closed out the afternoon.
In addition to the scheduled events, bingo was held Sunday and Monday with two games each day offering a $50 prize.
The Diagonal Lions Celebration also provided an opportunity for visitors to learn more about the area’s history. The Prairie Museum and Genealogy Center was open all three days.
Admission was free, with donations welcomed. The Diagonal Printing Museum was also open during the celebration, giving visitors an opportunity to step back in time and learn about the history of printing and newspapers in the community. Guests were able to tour the museum and view its collection of historic printing equipment and memorabilia.
With activities spread across three days, the Diagonal Lions Celebration offered something for a variety of interests, from motor-sports and tournaments to music, fireworks, the parade and family activities.
The celebration brought the Labor Day weekend to a close in Diagonal with a variety of activities that gave residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy time together and celebrate the community.
