AFTON, Iowa — The Raiderette volleyball team split a pair of conference matches on the road last week when they played at Lenox and at East Union. Mount Ayr swept Lenox 3-0, but fell to East Union in five sets, 3-2. The contests were the first conference matches of the year for the Raiderettes as they are 1-1 in the Pride of Iowa Conference and are 2-6 overall through eight matches.
On September 1, the Raiderettes played at Lenox and swept the Tigers 3-0. Mount Ayr won the first set by a score of 25-22, the second set by a score of 25-23, and a third set by 25-20. Mount Ayr has won three of the last four meetings between the two schools and won for the 20th time over the Tigers since the 2008 season.
Two nights later, Mount Ayr traveled to POI co-leader East Union. The Eagles came into the match 7-0 having not lost a match. They would leave the match against the Raiderettes still unbeaten with a 3-2 match win in five sets.
Mount Ayr won the first and third sets to take a 2-1 match lead. Mount Ayr won the first set 25-23 and East Union won the second set 25-22 to tie the match at 1-1. The Raiderettes won the third set 25-19 to take a 2-1 lead. East Union tied the match at 2-2 after winning the fourth set 25-15. In the fifth set, East Union would take the match, winning the set 15-8. The match win was the first time since the 2020 season that East Union had beaten Mount Ayr, a span of eight matches.
Mount Ayr has three seniors on their roster this year in Adley Dredge, Dannie Stewart and Jaylee Shaffer. Juniors on the team are Kate Newton, Emily Knox, Tarynn Dredge, Mackenzie Jackson and Emma Reynolds. There is one sophomore on the team in Payton Worthington. Two freshmen Brynlea Shields and Ellison Adams and 8th grader Ella Graham round out the varsity team.
Mount Ayr will play twice this week, at home against SE Warren on Tuesday, September 8 (results were not available as of press time) and at the Shenandoah Volleyball Tournament on Saturday. Teams at that tournament are Audubon, Bedford, East Union, Lenox, Missouri Valley, Shenandoah and Tri-Center. The Raiderettes return to POI matches on September 15 when they play at Central Decatur. The annual Mount Ayr Raiderette Volleyball Tournament is scheduled for September 19.
