MOUNT AYR, Iowa — The Mount Ayr Community School Board of Education discussed several conference-related issues during its recent meeting. Chief among those Pride of Iowa Conference issues is the upcoming departure of Nodaway Valley from the conference and possible changes to conference alignment.
Nodaway Valley previously announced plans to leave the conference at the conclusion of the current school year and join the West Central Activities Conference. Because conference alignment is now being handled at the state level, the district will need to appeal to the state conference alignment committee regarding the change.
Board members also discussed extending an invitation to Bedford to return to the conference.
Another possibility discussed was the creation of a larger “power conference” through a combination with the Bluegrass Conference. The idea remains in the discussion stage as schools consider options for future athletic and activity scheduling.
During the meeting, Andy Kellner expressed his appreciation to the school board and staff on behalf of his family. Kellner thanked the district for its support regarding his daughter’s open enrollment out of the district as the family prepares to move out of the district.
The board again revisited concerns surrounding eighth-grade students moving up to participate in high school sports. Some board members reported receiving an anonymous letter regarding the matter, indicating that there is still some disagreement within the community over the policy.
Board members referenced an addendum to the district’s policy concerning the issue. The addendum will be made available to the public through the Mount Ayr Community School District website.
The board also recognized an accomplishment by Mount Ayr FFA member Brodie Howell.
Howell has been selected to be a member of the National FFA Band and will play clarinet as she represents the Mount Ayr FFA Chapter alongside FFA members from across the country.
The National FFA Convention & Expo will be held Oct. 21-24 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Howell’s selection gives the Mount Ayr FFA Chapter a representative on the national stage as she joins FFA members from across the country for the annual convention.
