GUTHRIE CENTER, Iowa — The Mount Ayr football team gave it everything they had in their district road game at ACGC last Friday night. Mount Ayr was itching to get a shot at the Chargers after losing their last six to ACGC since 2023 including twice in the playoffs.
The Raiders nearly got that elusive win, but suffered their seventh straight loss to ACGC with a 21-12 defeat in Guthrie Center.
ACGC broke a scoreless game late in the first quarter on an 8-yard scoring run by Chargers quarterback Andrew Baumert to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead. Mount Ayr would score its first points of the game with 9:42 left before halftime on a big 71-yard touchdown run by Dyson Thompson. The two-point try did not work, but the Raiders trailed 7-6 as that would be the score heading into halftime.
ACGC scored the only points of the third quarter late in the quarter on a Ryder Cline 50-yard run to extend its lead to 14-6 after three quarters.
In the final quarter, Mount Ayr got close, 14-12, with Thompson’s second scoring run of the game, but the two-point try was again unsuccessful.
ACGC would add on a late score to get the final margin at 21-12.
All of the touchdowns in the game were rushing scores. Mount Ayr saw their record slip to 1-4 overall while ACGC improved to 4-0. The Raiders fall to 0-2 in district play and will be on the road again this week when they travel to Avoca for a game with AHSTW on Friday as the new month begins.
The Raiders will be home on October 9 for Homecoming when Nodaway Valley is in town.
Mount Ayr out-gained ACGC on the ground, rushing for 211 yards on 44 carries. Both Mount Ayr touchdowns were rushing scores. Thompson rushed for 159 yards on 25 carries and had two touchdowns while Adler Reed rushed 13 times for 46 yards.
Defensively, Mount Ayr was led in tackling by Trace Knapp with five and Drew Graham with 4.5.
The Raiders defense held the Chargers vaunted running attack to only 170 yards on 31 carries and no ACGC rusher had over 65 yards in the game. Lane Stringer rushed 14 times for 65 yards. Andrew Baumert had a pair of touchdown runs and Ryder Cline added a rushing score in the game. Defensively, Lane Stringer led the Chargers in tackles with 13.0.
AHSTW will bring a 3-2 record to the game Friday. The Vikings beat Nodaway Vlaley 27-6 last Friday.
