The opening football game of the season for the Mount Ayr high school football squad was played on the local field with the Grant City Tigers Friday afternoon, September 24. The local team was victorious with the score of 33-0, and played the following line up:

Right End , Raymond Johnson; right tackle, Rudolph Skarda; right guard, Vernon Lantz; center, Haven Kidney; left guard, Stanley Horne; left tackle, Sloan Coverdale; left end, Merritt Morse; Quarter, Kenneth Summers; half back, Victor Dalbey; half back, Merle Stephens; full back, Clair Davis. Those serving as substitues were: Merritt Morse for Summers at half, Ralph Long for Morse, John Trullinger for Kidney at center, Arlo Mosier for Ralph Long at end, Jean Sheppard for Morse at half, Olyn Rogers for Lantz at guard.

Miss Nellie Blackmore of the Tingley school won eleventh place in the state spelling contest at the state fair and received a prize of $5.

Will and Harry Archiebald, Clyde McDowell and Rolla Ashenhurst went  Saturday to Scotts Bluffs, NE, to work in the beet factory.

Thousands of people in northern Iowa recently beheld a strange sight. W.I. Branagan, of Emmetsburg, says that a special train carrying 200 Indians from North and South Dakota, representing the Sioux, Cheyennes, Omahas. Winnebagos, Sax and Fox-Arapahoes, passed through that city recently. They had perhaps eight cars. Many of the younger Indian boys and girls were nice looking and were well dressed. The train carried many horses and exhibits made by the Indians. All will attend Col. Cummins’ famous Indian congress of fifty-one tribes at the Sesqui-Centennial exposition at Philadelphia.

The Mount Ayr Lions Club will award three purebred gilts to outstanding boys in Ringgold County, according to Charles Lesan, club president.

Three different breeds will be awarded this year. They included a Hampshire, a Chester White and a Duroc-Jersey gilt. All gilts will be bred before they are presented to 4-H member, FFA member and one other boy.

Sharon Brown exhibited the first place medium weight Shorthorn steer at   the St. Joseph Interstate 4-H show held at St. Joseph, MO last week.

Mr. and Mrs. Don Stull, Patti Jane entertained with a waffle supper Thursday evening. Sharing the occasion were Mr. and Mrs. David Irving, Pat and Timmy and George Irving.

The crowning of homecoming queen will be Friday, September 24. Homecoming queen canidates were selected by a Senior Class vote are Shelley Floyd, Donna Johnson, Becky Schafer, Lesa Sickels and Marcy Solliday.

James Alvin Henderson, 23, of Waterloo, was held for a while Thursday, September 16, in Ringgold County Jail on an open charge of murder before being transferred to Waterloo by authorities from here.

Henderson was arrested by the Ringgold County officers at the Mount Ayr Hotel, where he was staying with three other persons.

C.L. (Chuck) Braby was named president of the Mount Ayr Community school board of directors at a board meeting Monday night.

Mrs. Sharon Glick recently assumed duties as a supervisor at the Ringgold County Challenge Center. She fills the position vacated by Michell Holmes who returned to classes at Northwest Missouri State University this fall.

Grief counselors using local dolls, some already sent to New York and Washington D.C. disaster sites.

One tool to help with children grieving from the loss of parents or friends in the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., has roots right here in Ringgold County.

Carol Ann Weeda and Connie Richards sew the large dolls, which have a series of four faces which can be velcroed into place to express different stages of grief.

Work is continuing on the Gooseberry Lake plans in a series of monthly meetings by  the board of directors of the Gooseberry Lake Agency, the group of project sponsors heading up the project.

Maloy news: Liz Lynch reported that it was 39 degrees on the hill this morning and Carole Davison reports they have lots of frost. They live south of Maloy. She said they have field beans that are just blooming. Lots of the corn is dried and the combines will soon be rolling. The earlier bean leaves are turning yellow and drying.

A Mount Ayr men’s bowling team won second place and a prize of $5,000 in the state super tournament of the state traveling tournament association last weekend.

The team of Ron Sickels, Rich Tipton, Marc Roberts, Rick Fox and Barry Jackson, who are bowlers at Majestic Lanes  in Mount Ayr, qualified for the state tournament by winning a regional tournament in Perry a few months ago.

The Ringgold Outdoor Alliance along with Lefty’s Club Tavern sponsored their annual fishing tournament on September 17-18.

Competition opened at 6 p.m. Saturday and weigh in was at noon on Sunday September 18.

Sue and Ashley Alden won first place for the biggest stringer and biggest catfish.

Jules and Marcus Daughton won the second biggest stringer, biggest bluegill, biggest crappie and biggest bass.

Kelcie Shields entered new territory for he Raiderettes this past week after she recorded here 1,000 career kills in volleyball against Interstate-35.
