One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, January 5, 1921.)
Governor Harding is sending out invitations to a National Conference on Parks to be held at Des Moines, January 10-12, 1921. This is done in cooperation with Hon. John Payne, Secretary of the Interior, and in recognition of the public parks movement throughout the United States.
A program will be presented of addresses and discussion by eminent leaders upon the necessity of establishment and maintenance of national, state and local parks; upon legislation administration and use of parks; upon harmonizing and coordinating these and upon all allied subjects.
The new Standard Oil filing station, 2 blocks north of the NE corner of the square is now open for business with Alex Endsley in charge…Lee Frost has purchased the interest of his partner, Floyd Tallman, in the barber shop on Depot Street and is again the sole proprietor…Earl Horne recently resigned his position in the Rexall store and left Monday for Des Moines, where he will enter Des Moines college and take up course in pharmacy.
Marriages: Dec. 30, 1920, Lawrence Stephens and Lottie Black…December 25, 1920, Myrtle James and Carl Waugh.

One hundred-twenty marriages were published in the Record News during the year 1945. The total number shows a decrease of 27 marriages as compared with the total of 147 in 1944.
Service Selections: Those receiving their honorable discharge from service were: Tech 5th Grade, Paul Trullinger, Gilbert Cox, Pvt. 1st Class, Gerald Jones, Howard Bill Todd, Raymond Buchanan, Denzil Walker, and S.Sgt. Patrick Carr.
Student Ayr: Grade News; 1st grade, Marlene Taylor and Max Buckner from Lotts Creek #4 visited us Friday. We received 10 new story books today…Orville Roach moved to Clarinda, we shall miss him. Meet the Faculty: Our first grade teacher, Margaret Sheumaker, was graduated from the Mount Ayr High School and attended Drake University. She likes horse back riding, reading and baton twirling, but dancing is her favorite pass time.
Willis and Irene Hood sold their stock of furniture to Barker and Webb with immediate possession being given. Mr. and Mrs. Hood have opened a new location in the downstairs rooms below the office of R.S. Beall and Arthur Palmer, where they will continue their furniture and sewing machine repair.
Births: December 22, a son, Stephen Dale, to Mr. and Mrs. Neil Georgeson.

The Mount Ayr Volunteer Fire Department responded to 36 calls during 1970, almost double the number of the preceding year, according to the annual report submitted by Harold Golliday, sec.-treasurer. The number included 16 fires in towns and 20 country fires.
Lana Sickels, daughter of John and Norma Sickels of Mount Ayr and a Mount Ayr Community senior, was elected Worthy Advisor of the Mount Ayr Assembly, Order of the Rainbow for Girls at the regular meeting held Monday night.
Student Ayr: New Years Customs-by Joyce Golliday; Just as history is made every day, customs are passed on from generation to generation. On New Years Day the Roman’s would clean their chimneys. This custom was meant to bring good luck to the household for the coming year. Thus this saying, cleaning the chimney or cleaning the slate arose.

County jail needs new fire escape to remain operating. The sheriff office has a real liability concern about the matter of using the jail because the state fire marshall, Roy Marshall, has not been able to issue a fire certificate to Ringgold County authorities. An option open to the local sheriff’s office is to incarcerate prisoners in a jail in a surrounding Iowa county, if room is available.
Mercantile Bank Corporation Inc., the St. Louis based bank holding company, announced this week the completion of it’s merger with Hawkeye Bank Corporation, which gives Mercantile a major position in the deposit market share in Iowa.

Ten Years Ago

Ringgold County fire fighters face two more blazes in Mount Ayr this past week. A fire did major damage to the home of Doug Clark at 207 W. Jefferson. Another fire was fought at the home of Sam and Tammy Prudden.
Iowa seasonally adjusted unemployment rate edged down to 6.6 percent in November from 6.7 percent in October. The states jobless rate was reported at 6.5 percent one year ago.
Following the swearing in of David Inloes as member of the Ringgold County Board of Supervisors Monday morning, officers for the coming year were elected. Named board chairman for 2011 was Dale Walters while Kurt Shaha will be the board vice-chairman.
Voter turnout was light in the special election where Republican, Joni Ernst, of Red Oak was named an Iowa Senator in senate district 48 Tuesday.
