One Hundred Years Ago

Jarngin’s Weekly: Iowa Newsletter; Has an orphanage a legal right to keep secret the names of persons adopting children? A suit is now pending in Polk County district court wherein the Iowa Children Home Society is defendant. Three years ago, three children belonging to Charles Lieske of Sheldon, O’Brien County, were placed in the custody of the home. Each of the children has been adopted. In of the whereabouts of the children is kept by the parent. The court will be asked to determine the justice or injustice of such a system. It is a rule universally followed by orphanages.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

Paul E. Evans, a discharged veteran of WWII, became owner of Hotel Mount Ayr Friday January 11. The purchase was made from A.F. Holland, who had owned the hotel for seventeen years to the day the sale was made.
Fashion Fads: In Bedford, IA as well as Mount Ayr, the fad of boys and girls wearing sweaters alike has become popular. Also the boys and girls have been wearing saddle shoes and heavy socks alike.
On display this week at the United Food Market is one of the most interesting arrays of citrus fruits ever shown in Mount Ayr. In extending an invitation to the public to drop in at the store and inspect the fruit, Mr. Bechtel extends a special invitation to school students to view the display. Included in the display are the following: Citron, from Palestine and from which all other citrus fruits originated through pollenizing and hybridizing; Shaddock from Brazil and West Indies, mother and father of the grapefruit; Lemelo, origin from Florida; King Orange, origin Siam, most unusual of orange family; Calamondin Orange from Philippines, very small, round, and sour; Kumquat, from Japan; Mandelo, from Florida, size of small grapefruit; Warner Tangerine, Florida; Tangelo, Florida, parents are practically all variety of tangerines and grapefruits, giving numerous crosses and variety of flavors, shapes and colors.
Recommendations in writing, which proposes to divide Ringgold County into three supervisor districts, were filed January 10 in the office of the county auditor for the consideration of members of the board of supervisors. If the proposal were adopted by the board, one district would comprise the townships of Tingley, Union, Monroe, Liberty and Athens, population 3,540; another district would embrace the townships of Rice, Poe, Middlefork, Lotts Creek and Riley, population 3,852; and the third district would include the townships of Lincoln, Jefferson, Grant,Washington, Waubonsie, Benton and Clinton, population 3,846.

The Doyle Trullinger’s of RFD2, Lamoni, have been selected as the Farmers Home Administration farm family of the year for Ringgold and Union Counties.
January 25 is the deadline for indicating interest in wanting piped water in the Town & Country Water District in Ringgold County. If you have not contacted a member of the Steering Committee then you will not be included in the original plan, according to Don Kinne, chairman. All others may not be able to be added later, since water lines will be planned to go only where people want water.
Greenfield wins Tall Corn Conference Wresting title and Raiders are 2nd. In the top match of the night Kent Blunck won over Corning’s Tony Jennings in the 105 lb class. Each was undefeated this year. It was Blunck’s first win over Jennings in four tries and it came near the end of the 3rd period when he scored a reversal and a predicament to win 4-2. Blunck was named the outstanding wrestler in the meet for his performance.

Ringgold County Attorney, Arlen Hughes, 61, died suddenly Monday evening January 15 at his home after apparently suffering a cardiac arrest.
It is homecoming week for the Diagonal Community High School and the king candidates are Travis Anderson, Caleb Utterback, Jeff Tull, and Nick Nelson. The queen candidates are, Billi Goodale, Jessie Tull, Amy Smith and Elisabetta Galimberti.
Mount Ayr Community hoop shoot winners were: Sarah Geist, Scott Cook, Kellen Waldier, Jana Johnson, Clay Pettit, Natasha Ward, Shelly Adams, Justin Cole, Michael Smith, Kelsey Allen, Burt Murphy and Mandy Johnson.

Ten Years Ago

A Ringgold County resident is part of a group of retired horsemen who are making it a tradition to ride around the Lake of Three Fires near Bedford at least once a month all year. Max Buckner of Mount Ayr, Everett Lee of Bedford, and Russ Baldwin of Hopkins, MO are a trio. In 2009 the men rode their horses at the state park eleven months out of the year and this year they completed twelve.
Great Western Bank has been reorganized as a top lender in the state of Iowa by the U S Small Business Admin. for fiscal year 2010.
Changes in Iowa law is regards to permits to carry weapons has brought a rash of interest to the Ringgold County sheriff’s office. New five year permits that deal not only with hand guns but with rifles and shot guns as well allow for open carrying or concealed carrying loaded weapons.
