One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record-News, Thursday, March 23, 1921.)
Young Bear, the son of the last Chief of the Mesquakie Indians on the reservation in Tama County, and who would probably be reigning as his successor but for the action of the Indian department in refusing to recognize any more Indian Chiefs, calling on Governor Kendall at Des Moines recently. He was accompanied by William Leaf also of the Tama reservation, who acted as interpreter although Young Bear has a fairly good English vocabulary. Young Bear’s mission to the governor was to attempt to induce him designate one day each year in Iowa as “Indian Day,” to be observed with appropriate ceremonies.
John W. Maine, a pioneer resident of Shenandoah, Page County, died recently. His principal distinction rested in the length of his whiskers. At one time his beard was eight feet, two inches long. he had a method of protecting it by carefully rolling it into a mat that found a resting place beneath his specially designed shirt front. He took great pains in combing the hirsute appendage and was proud of the oddity. At the world’s fair in Chicago in 1893, he attracted much attention and curiosity at the Iowa building on Iowa day by posing with his flowing beard reaching the floor of the building while he was mounted on a platform two feet high.

Two Mount Ayr residence properties, owned by the late Chas. A. Campbell were sold Monday at public auction for $12,610. Emmet R. Warin paid $8,200 for the Sheldon Heights property and R. E. Hauptmann placed the final bid of $4,410 on the property two blocks west of the schoolhouse.
A jury trial, the first since September 1942, was in progress yesterday in the district court of Ringgold County in Mount Ayr with Judge George Johnston presiding. The case is that of Alice Burwell vs. Edgar Siddens, et al, the plaintiff asking for hospital expenses for injuries sustained in a auto-truck accident May 25, 1945, six miles north of Mount Ayr when her husband Frank Burwell was killed.
Opening Saturday, March 30 at Mount Ayr, Huggins Roller Rink (successor to Bryant Roller Rink).

The Ringgold County Historical Society Inc. passed a milestone in its 32 year history Saturday afternoon as members voted to accept the offer of the old telephone factory building in Ellston, by Russell Cheers of Arispe. This large brick building which adjoins the lot on which Cornwall Restored Pioneer Home is to be place has more than 5,000 feet of floor space. The building will be used as a museum for the preservation and display of farm machines now obsolete but in common use in the past.

Twenty Five Years Ago

Backers of a second grocery store in Mount Ayr are moving forward with a plan to sell stock in the corporation. Community Grocers Inc., an Iowa corporation, has been set up and currently owns the former Place’s department store building, which was vacated when Place’s built its new building.
A final decision on whether to move toward dissolution of the Grand Valley school district at some point in the future was put off for a month at a meeting of the school board in Kellerton Wednesday, March 13.
When the Hawkeye Bank of Mount Ayr opens its doors for business on March 22, 1996 it will have a new name–Mercantile Bank of Mount Ayr, but will continue its tradition of customer service, community involvement and local leadership.

With two more resignations from the city of Mount Ayr staff this past week, the city has two union employees left working for it. Long-time city employee, Mike Wimer, turned in his resignation effective Thursday March 24 and Lisa Drake resigned the new position she had been reduced to effective April 1. They join city superintendent, Chuck Waske, who had resigned earlier in leaving city employment. With the resignation of Wimer the city no longer has any employees who are licensed to run the city water or sewer plants at the level that is needed.
