One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record News, Thursday, June 1, 1921.)
A message received by relatives this morning from the war department announces that the body of Clinton F. Lesan, who gave his life while serving in the American Army in France, had arrived and would likely reach Mount Ayr on Friday.
At a meeting of the State Medical Society in Des Moines it was voted to inaugurate and organize a campaign to educate the public in the matters pertaining to health measures and to urge cooperation in making home conditions more sanitary.
One physician referred to a visitation of typhoid in a family of seven, all of the members being down at once with the disease from which two died, and attributed the whole difficulty to the location of a privy on an elevation above the well from which the family secured its water supply.
A prominent physician made the startling statement that nine -tenths of the cases of pneumonia could be abated by the proper ventilation of sleeping and living rooms.
Dug Sullivan sold his business, including stock of automobiles and auto accessories to Dorn Brothers of Indianola, immediate possession being given. The business will be conducted under the firm name of Dorn Auto Company. The new firm will retain the agency for the sale of Dodge Brothers and Buick automobiles and accessories and maintain an up-to-date repair department…John White who recently sold his store at Caledonia to R. R. Berkey of Kellerton, is now located in Mount Ayr and that he will have his store in the building one block north and one-half block east of the NE corner of the square, open for business this week. Mr. White will carry a full line of dry goods, work clothing, shoes, groceries and notions.

Years Ago

Notice is hereby given to owners of row boats that all boats must be securely moored with chain and lock while not in use. It will be necessary to revoke licenses of those who operate boats contrary to this ruling. This action is taken in the interest of promoting safety. On several occasions venturesome boys have used available boats without regard for their own safety.
Royce Davis, who has been on leave of absence from his position as manager of Rideta Electric Company Inc. since February 1, 1942, will resume his duties June 1 following his honorable discharge from the US Army, which becomes effective today, May 30. He has been in service for 52 months, fifteen of which were spent on duty in Europe and is being discharged with the rank of captain.

(From the Mount Ayr Record News, Thursday, June 6, 1971.)
Danny Lutrick injured in tractor upset. Lutrick, distributor for Borden milk in Mount Ayr, was en route to a farm pond south of Mount Ayr to fish when the accident happened. The pickup truck he was driving became stuck in the field. He hitched a tractor to the pickup and was trying to loosen it when the tractor overturned pinning Lutrick’s legs beneath the stirring wheel. Mrs. Lutrick, the former Jeannette Moore, was with him and ran to several nearby farm houses before she found the Doyle Thomas family home who summoned the Mount Ayr Volunteer Fire Department.
Band sells records, The MACHS Raider band has available for sale the records cut at the last concert according to Merrill Perry, director. These records contain ten songs, five by the black band, two by the white band, and three by the stage band. A few of the selections are: “Festivo, Festival of Hymns, Bandology, Hold On and Spinning Wheels.” The records can be purchased for $4 from any band member.
Three chosen for Boys and Girls State by Ringgold County American Legion Post 172. The boys will attend June 5-11 and they are Gordon Bradley and Andy Reynolds. The girl attending June 6-12 is Paula Hixson.

Twenty Five Years Ago

Raider sophomore, Casey Smith, cleared 6’2” in the state Class 2A high jump, at the the state track meet in Des Moines on Saturday, to take third place.
A young Mount Ayr fisherman made quite a haul on a fishing trip recently to SW Iowa. Dustin Pherigo of Mount Ayr hooked an eight pound 2 oz. cat fish that measured 30 inches long.
Just how much rain has Ringgold County had this spring? In April and May the station here has recorded 10.83 inches of rain, with 9.35 inches of that coming in May. This compares with 11.87 inches of rain received in all of April and May in 1995. Only 8.29 inches of that amount came in May however.

Sophomore Raider trackster Braydee Poore won the Class 2A high jump title at the state track meet Friday. Poore lept 6’4” and had one fewer miss than second-place finisher.
