One Hundred Years Ago
(From the Mount Ayr Record News, Thursday, September 7, 1921.)
The Mount Ayr schools opened Monday with an enrollment of 495, and with bright prospect for a successful year’s work.
The enrollment in high school on the opening day was 185, the largest in the history of the school and the prospect is that before the end of the first week this number will be considerably increased.
There were 29 seniors, 41 juniors, 40 sophomores and 71 freshman and 4 post graduate students.
Judge Homer Fuller, of this city, is presiding judge in the hearing of a murder trial now in progress in the Wayne County district court at Corydon.
Frank Valkovitch is being tried for the shooting of Peter Morris at Seymour on July 4. The jury is composed of ten men and two women and most of the evidence is being brought before them by way of an interpreter.

Births: August 29, twins, a boy and girl, to Mr. and Mrs. E.G. Corbitt…September 1, a daughter, to Mr. and Mrs. Asa Huggins.

Years Ago

Petitions are being circulated through the county and are being freely signed by taxpayers who request the board of supervisors to submit to the voters at general election, November 5, the proposition of erecting, equipping, and maintaining a county hospital.
Mount Ayr will join Lamoni and Bethany, MO in the sponsorship of the first National Trail Ride which will be held October 10-12 and which is hailed as the greatest out-of-doors event of the year.
The Trail Ride plan originated in Lamoni, where residents are enthusiastically advertising and boosting the event.
Approximately 100 riders from at least a dozen states including California, New Mexico, Texas, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Colorado, and Iowa, will gather at Lamoni for the first National Trail Ride ever to be held. Riders will leave Lamoni the morning of October 10 for a hundred mile ride through southern Iowa and northern Missouri, over trails that wind down country lanes, over dirt roads, up and down hills and across river bottoms.

Fifty Years Ago

Announcement was made this week of the sale of Rhoades Funeral Home in Mount Ayr to Mr. and Mrs. L. Banks Wilson of Clearfield. Sale of the business marked the close of more than half a century in the funeral business for the Rhoades family.
County pastures and lawns took on a greener hue over the weekend following a general rain that dumped up to 3.5 inches of precious moisture on the parched earth.
Another new business has been established recently. Doors of the Town & Country Photo Studio are open for business in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Grune at 307 N Webster in Mount Ayr.
Grune, who will operate the studio himself, moved here recently from Downers Grove, IL.
Marriage: June 1, Georgia Novak and Hillman Walter.
Births: September 2, a son, to Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Smith.

A large grant for the DEKKO Foundation to help with the funding of the Family Resource Center in Mount Ayr, A check for $109,000 to help with the final funding needed for the over $600,000 project which will house child care and pre-school facilities for the community.
Area gardeners are pumping out the produce in recent weeks and Barton Spencer of Mount Ayr has had a number of big muskmelon from his vines. He brought in a ten pound muskmelon that measures 30 inches around from his garden spot west of Polk Villa.

More than two dozen Decatur and Ringgold County residents joined approximately 1,000 determined Strong America Now participants in attending the Iowa Straw Poll on Saturday August 13, to support candidates of their choice who have pledged to implement the Lean Six Sigma process to achieve a 25 percent reduction in federal spending (eliminating at least 500 billion dollars annually) and completely pay the national debt by 2017.
Century and Heritage Farm families were recognized during a ceremony a the Iowa State Fair again this year with two Ringgold County families honored. To qualify, a family must have owned at least 40 acres for 100 years or more in the case of the Century Farms and 150 years or more for a Heritage Farm. Included in the list of Century Farms was that of James and Lisa Taylor of Diagonal, the farm has been in the family since 1911.
Included in the Heritage Farms was the farm of Rue and Ruth Nickle of Clearfield. The farm has been in the family since 1855.
